For many years the wines of the famed region of Montalcino have been recognized as the top wines of Italy. This is still a very true statement today. The central town is perched on the top of the hill and the vineyards are patched together on the hillsides below. The Ciacci family’s history dates back to the 17th century, and their land holdings are some of the most historic in Tuscany. The legendary winemaking estate is located on the south side of the hill around the smaller village of Castelnuovo facing the Orcia Valley. Originally the estate was owned by the church and Francesco Ciacci purchased the property in 1877.
Coming from the steep hillsides of Montalcino, Pianrosso is the famous vineyard site from where this Sangiovese hails. Pianrosso is additionally known as the vineyard that gave Ciacci Piccolomini its excellent reputation. The vines average about 25 years in age. The Sangiovese is first fermented in stainless steel and glass concrete vats. The ageing is done in very small Slavonian oak barrels over the course of three years and followed by one year in bottle. This is a special bottle meant to go with foods of the region, like Bistecca alla Fiorentina. It will age gracefully.
