For seven generations the Rougier family have dwelt in their castle and held court as makers of, among other wines, perhaps the greatest rosé in the world. The amount of care and strenuous effort that goes into their wines -and their near-magical cellars whose very presence imparts an extra layer of complexity to the juice- is one of the trademarks of the world’s best winemakers. Perhaps the other most crucial aspect of great winemaking is a willingness to sacrifice quantity -sometimes significantly so-in order to maintain high quality. René Rougier and his forebears have never hesitated to do so, and the magnificence of their wines is deliciously expressive of that commitment. Grenache, Cinsault and Mourvedre play the lead roles in this classic Provence cuvée, where flavors of watermelon, strawberry and an almost candy-like ripe fruit lusciousness are back-framed by bright acidity, even a touch of salinity and a delicious, dry finish.

It always amazes me that certain regions gain much more fame than others, even though there are some incredible wines off the beaten path or in many regions one would not associate quickly with quality. When I talk about Provence France, many people just think of fancy boats and stunning views. However, Chateau Simone—from the appellation Palette, just north of Aix-en-Provence and only miles from the water—creates world-class wines that deserve a place at the table with many of the great estates. The appellation is dominated by limestone soils that cover the vineyards of many famed regions. The weather allows for incredible vine age to happen. Disease doesn't happen often in this part of the wine world. The climate is perfect and it is the dream of many to retire and spend the remainder of their lives in this magical part of the world.
