Anthill Farms is a group of three friends who went against all the odds to start a winery in California. They didn’t have money saved nor were they born into the business. They were cellar rats, the guys moving hoses and cleaning floors, for some pretty significant wineries, Williams Selyem being the most influential. However, while still quite young, the three decided to pull together a tiny amount of cash and started making wine at a crushpad facility. Before long the wines had a cult following and we’ve been drinking them ever since. Many of Anthill’s wines only make it to a mailing list or restaurants; we are lucky to include their small production wines.
Peugh Vineyard, located in the middle of the Russian River Valley, has head-trained Chardonnay vines, something rarely seen for this variety. This is normally used on crazy, rocky soils with Syrah, Grenache or Mourvedre, but not Chardonnay. The reason this happened is the vines were planted in the early 1940s when California growers had no idea what they were doing. The result today is that this unique Chardonnay is produced from some of the oldest vines in the entire state.

Founded over 20 years ago by Tom Stolpman when he discovered hidden in the hills of California’s Central Coast a rare limestone outcropping unobstructed from the Pacific Ocean wind which became part of the now famous Ballard Canyon AVA. The winery is currently run by son Pete Stolpman and his wife Jessica. Known for employing their own crew "La Quadrilla", the vineyards are maintained only by hand with care and dedication.
Cuvee Otto is a cherry-picked selection of Chenin Blanc, which comes from both the first pass through the vineyard and the first “free-run” juice, which occurs before the pressed juice. In short, this the best of the best, named after Peter and Jessica’s son Otto, harvested just two months after his birth. This Chenin Blanc is meant to age gracefully, hopefully just like their son.

Three of France’s greatest winemakers came together to create a project in California, though why in the heck would this interest them? It turns out that even being a French winemaker is unexpectedly limiting, particularly when local wine laws prohibit creativity. Domaine Montille partners Étienne de Montille with Brian Sieve in Burgundy and Rodolphe Peters of Pierre Peters in Champagne set their sights on the maritime region of Santa Rita Hills. The proximity to the ocean keeps the vines cool and the various marine soil types make hauntingly beautiful wines. This project really is the best of the winemaking minds of France coupled with the best sites the New World has to offer–a perfect place to make Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and sparkling wine.
This is a very special site split into two parts in the Santa Rita Hills. It is extremely rocky and has plenty of exposure to the wind. The wine ages in barrels of various sizes for 18 months before it is released.
Presqu'ile, Sanford & Benedict Chardonnay 2020Regular price $65.00 Save $-65.00
According to Matt Murphy, cofounder and president of Presqui’le winery, the greatest wineries are multigenerational family endeavors. In fact, the family is very close and loves doing things together, including his sister Anna, the enologist. Anna and Matt both grew up around the family’s farm in Louisiana, which was the forerunner for their interest in winemaking. Dieter Cronje, winemaker for Presqu’ile, has quite the prestigious resumé. While on a mission to gain a more global perspective, he did an exchange program with the University of Bordeaux and traveled extensively through Burgundy and Champagne to gain more understanding of Pinot Noir. After working with Matt Murphy at the Ambullneo winery and sharing many late night bottles of Burgundy, they realized they worked well together. Matt then decided that Dieter would be a great fit as winemaker for Presqu’ile. They are making incredible representations of cool-climate Pinot Noir in the very hilly vineyards of Santa Barbara, California.
