The small image that appears on most of Thierry Germain’s labels is a silhouette of the man himself; he is walking, casting a long shadow that transitions into two tall grape vines. This image is the perfect metaphor to imply the large shadow Thierry casts in life; affecting the vines around him through his ability to produce healthy grapes and practice biodynamic farming. While other vignerons in Saumur are pumping as much synthetic fertilizer into the vineyards as possible, Thierry is using compost when necessary, forcing the grapes to suffer, resulting in lower yields and complex pure wines.

“Cuvee Domaine” is Thierry Germain’s flagship wine, representing what he can do. This Cabernet Franc from Saumur comes from vines ranging from 4 to 70 years in age! All the grapes are completely destemmed, allowing for a more fresh and fruity wine. It is aged mostly in stainless, with a little bit of little exposure to small wooden tanks for 3 to 4 months. There is no added sulfur.

The Maccan family has sustained three generations of winemakers in Friuli Grave, a region located in the northeastern area of Italy. The owner, Stefano Maccan, sums up the family’s vision with this quote, “My family’s passion for farming grew inside me until it became something more than mere curiosity and turned into determination... the determination to finally produce my own family wine.” Even though the Maccan family had been making wine dating back to 1788, it wasn’t until 2012 that Tenuta Maccan was an established domain. The Maccan team pays homage to tradition while innovating with their organic and certified sustainable farming techniques.

This Cabernet Franc is aged in stainless steel for 8-10 months for a purely fruity, yet grassy expression of this variety. This is elegant and velvety with good acidity and finish. Enjoy this with any cured meats or game meat.

As the wine world talks about Catherine and Pierre Breton, one will hear them referenced as "real life bon vivants vignerons." I love this description so much as it perfectly captures the soul of this married couple. From the beginning, they have truly wanted to have fun in life and to make unadulterated natural wines long before the hipness of the natural wine scene took hold. Recently, they started the three-year process of seeking biodynamic certification. In fact, they have become international icons for the natural wine movement in an area where the climate and soil can make organic practices difficult. They are based in Bourgueil in the Loire Valley and have an impressive spread of vineyards ranging in soils and vine age. One might say the innovative couple is well ahead of the game and doing it with charm and grace. 

“Les Perrieres” comes from 40 year-old vines from one of the most prized hillsides in Bourgueil; the Bretons’ greatest red. This Bourgueil is low-yielding due to the 40 year old vines. The wine spends two years in 550 liter barrels, some of which are new.

In the appellation of Chinon in the Central Loire Valley lies the humble village of Cravant les Coteaux. It is theorized that the “Cru” vineyards of the appellation dwell here. This is where Patrick Lambert farms some of the area's most exciting wines rivaling the more well-known names like Baudry and Pallus. Originally belonging to his grandfather, Patrick took over this estate in 1990. As is often the case for the new generation, he began making the kind of wine that he wanted to. This started with reducing the size of the estate to the best plots so he might focus on quality over quantity. He reduced yields and converted to organic farming. Certification for organic farming came in 2014. His vines range from 19-60 years in age. Everything is hand harvested.

Gourmandise is French for “gluttony,” perhaps referring to the feeling of glutton one might feel after imbibing in a lot of this fresh and fun Cabernet Franc. The vines used are about 20 years in age making for a more intensely fruity wine. The grapes are completely destemmed, giving the wine more perfume and more juiciness. To stay in pursuit of freshness, the bottle is fermented and aged in lined tanks underground in Patrick’s cellar.

At first glance, “Ashes and Diamonds” only brushes the surface of what the winery truly represents. The story—or journey rather—begins in the autumn of 2013 when Kashy Khaledi (son of winemaker Darioush Khaledi) was a creative media executive at Capitol Records, the “ideal job.” In the midst of a lengthy creative stump, Khaledi would often turn to old films for inspiration. He found one that shifted the course of his life—the 50s Polish film Ashes and Diamonds. A dream started to take shape; Khaledi threw himself into researching the viticulture and enology that shaped California’s wine culture. His quest for joint ventures began; he teamed up with Steve Matthiasson and Diana Snowden, farming vineyards in Napa Valley in the pursuit of balanced wine.

Grand Vin #2 comes from the A&D Vineyard in the Oak Knoll District of Napa. A&D is a Bordeaux style blend of the classic Merlot and Cabernet Franc in a seamless marriage of freshness, fruit and minerality. It is aged for 20 months in 35% new French oak barrels and bottled below 14% alcohol, which is almost unheard of these days in California red wines.

“Franc de Pied” undergoes whole cluster fermentation in foudres for 8 to 10 days. It is then aged in large foudres for 12 months. This is a Cabernet Franc that can age with grace. Its name means "free of foot."

This Cabernet Franc comes from vines that are 56 years in age, the oldest of Patrick’s vines. Initially the juice macerates for several days in epoxy-lined tanks underground. The wine ages for one year in barrels that have been used several times.
