Ampeleia was born only just in 2002 from the collaboration and friendship between noteworthy icons—Elisabetta Foradori, Thomas Widmann, and Giovanni Podini. They created a place where they could not only develop an agricultural project but also fulfill a common dream. The estate comprises different plots of land, each located far apart and on different altitude levels—their mission is to create variables in altitude, soil type and microclimatic conditions. Variety is the spice of life, at least Ampeleia, representing the project’s constant quality and willingness to discover. The grape varieties that have been planted are common to Mediterranean vineyards reflecting the tradition of growing multiple varieties in the same vineyard. Today, the estate extends over three altitude levels and covers 35 hectares of vineyard.

This Cabernet Franc hails from “La Rocca” vineyard, which refers to the site being a natural fortress ringing in at 500 meters altitude. This wine is a celebration of the wine as a monovarietal, which shows off the clay-limstone and schist soils from which it hails. On a clear day, the island of Corsica can be seen while standing in La Rocca vineyard.

This is high altitude Cabernet Franc from the Ampeleia di Sopra vineyard. The grapes are fully destemmed and fermentation is done in cement tanks and large oak tasks, resulting in a pure, clean, and fruity wine. The wine then ages for two years in bottle before it is released.

Giovanni Ascione and Maurizio Alongi are Italian natives who have both coincidentily worked in winemaking regions all over Europe. Both worked independently for years doing consulting for many esteemed estates across Italy before deciding to branch out together. Avoiding over-ripening and over-extraction, the duo is inspired by vinifiying lessor-known and often-blended varietals into single varietal bottlings.

Clivo Altura, Le Bighellone Pinot Nero 2022

Variety: Pinot Noir ( Pinot Nero )

Born on the property of Corzano e Paterno to one of our favorite Tuscan winemakers is William Goldschmidt, son of Arianna Goldschmidt. While William spent much of his childhood surrounded by the family vines in Tuscany, he later spent five years working in Burgundy under the great Jean-Marc Roulot among other French winemakers. He came back to Tuscany with a fresh vision. In 2020, he looked to explore making single-vineyard Sangiovese, a concept that was very much inspired by his time in Burgundy. Be on the lookout for more of his wines as he has only just begun.

The Pinot Nero vineyard is planted in the middle of a 2000-hectare forest at 700 meters above sea level. The site airs on the cooler side allowing for a long growing season. The vines were planted in the early 2000s.

While Tuscany is known for its Sangiovese, Fabbrica has pushed the envelope of Tuscany’s capabilities as soon as it was founded in 2013. In the Val d’Orcia in eastern Tuscany, the soils and climates are more aligned with that of the Rhone Valley. The hilly part of the village of Pienza recalls those of the southern Rhone while the soils there are a reminder of the northern Rhone. The direction of Fabbrica is one of exploration and curiosity.

While Tuscany is known for its Sangiovese, Fabbrica has pushed the envelope of Tuscany’s capabilities as soon as it was founded in 2013. In the Val d’Orcia in eastern Tuscany, the soils and climates are more aligned with that of the Rhone Valley. The hilly part of the village of Pienza recalls those of the southern Rhone while the soils there are a reminder of the northern Rhone. The direction of Fabbrica is one of exploration and curiosity.

This wine is pressed and foot crushed, with 15% whole bunches. Aged for 15 months in concrete, this Sangiovese is fruit forward yet round.

While this blend is nowhere close to a classic Tuscan wine, the style of Syrah and Viognier blended is classic in the northern Rhone Valley in France, specifically in Cote Rotie. This is Fabbrica’s nod to that very famous style of both full-bodied Syrah with the aromatic Viognier.

Wendel Gelpke, a Swiss architect, fell madly in love with these romantic hillsides. The Corzano property was purchased back in 1969, and then the neighboring property of Paterno in 1974. These hillsides are separated from the Chianti Classico subzone by the Via Cassia, a road that runs parallel to the river Pisa. Farming here has always been organic and her Sardinian sheep herd roams the rows to naturally fertilize the vines; talk about sustainability. As is classic for the area, the properties produce mainly Sangiovese. Wendel and the family own and operate the winery, and keep very occupied by making their own cheese and olive oil.

Even though the estate Monte Bernardi dates back to 1085 in the region of Panzano in Tuscany, Michael Schmelzer and family purchased the estate in 2003 and have been making beautiful Sangiovese-based wines and olive oil ever since. In addition to Monte Bernardi, Michael also keeps himself busy with several other projects in Italy, one of those being Fuoristrada, which means “off road.” The focus with this project is making excellent wine under an eco-friendly label on par with the quality you’d expect from the Monte Bernardi wines. Fuoristrada is packed, not “bottled” in a Tetra Pak resulting in a liter package. This means more wine for you, and less impact on the environment.

This is a fresh and fruity Sangiovese coming from its homeland in Tuscany. The wine is certified organic and vegan, using one of the flagship varieties of Tuscany.

Gaja is still among the most famed winemakers of the world today. Started by Giovanni Gaja in 1859, their legend is still going strong five generations later. Though each new member of the family brought with them a sense of excellence and attention to detail, it was really Angelo who brought the family name into the international spotlight, turning heads and garnering a reputation for pushing winemaking to new heights. Most notably is the family’s decision to use barrique with their 1975 Barbaresco cuvee at a time when everyone was using large barrels for aging. Taking this a step further, he began bottling many of his Nebbiolo as single vineyards, and crucial steps were made in the vineyard to yield better fruit. Even though the estate Monte Bernardi dates back to 1085 in the region of Panzano in Tuscany, Michael Schmelzer and family purchased the estate in 2003 and have been making beautiful Sangiovese-based wines and olive oil ever since. The property’s vineyards are situated in the hilly, southern-most region of Panzano, an area that has been acknowledged as one of the “Grand Crus” of Chianti Classico. Most of the vineyards are more than 40 years old. Before 1992, the grapes were sold to neighboring farms. The Schmelzer family, originally from Michigan, purchased Monte Bernardi in 2003. As winemaker, Michael has invested time, love and money in the vineyards, the winery and villa. The property was certified biodynamic in 2004.

The cypress tree, emblematic of Tuscany, and thus perfectly appropriate for this “Super Tuscan lite”. Michael Schmelzer, ex-pat winemaker at the helm of Monte Bernardi in Chianti Classico, oversees production of this wine, imbuing it with his philosophy and approach. Grapes are grown organically, and make their way to the bottle with minimal intervention. Once in the glass, it’s all bright fruit expressive of the region.

It is not enough to say that Isole e Olena is held to the highest regard and winemaker Paolo de Marchi has an unquestionable vision. Fourth generation winemaker Paolo De Marchi studied Agriculture at the University of Turin and worked harvests in California and France before returning to the family estate in 1976. He found much need for improvement and modernization in the Chianti Classico region. Paolo discovered a way to balance tradition with innovation by planting international varieties. Isole e Olena is named for the formation of the two estates that were purchased by the De Marchi family in the 1950s. He's earned a reputation as “Mr. Sangiovese” and also the “Dean of Chianti.” He sold the estate and completed his last vintage for Isole e Olena in 2022 after 50 years.

This is Cepparello, first produced in 1980. It is widely acclaimed as one of the greatest expressions of Sangiovese today. Here’s one description of the complex 2015 Cepparello: “Shows lots of black cherries, cranberry tea, caramelized orange peel, roasted herbs and citrus peel. Full-bodied with ripe and quite round tannins that frame layers of cherries. Bright and fresh, yet rich and long at the same time. The Sangiovese character really springs out of the glass.”

Fourth generation winemaker Paolo De Marchi studied Agriculture at the University of Turin and worked harvests in California and France before returning to the family estate in 1976. He found much need for improvement and modernization in the Chianti Classico region. Paolo discovered a way to balance tradition with innovation by planting international varieties. Isole e Olena is named for the formation of the two estates that were purchased by the De Marchi family in the 1950s. He's earned a reputation as “Mr. Sangiovese” and also the “Dean of Chianti.” He sold the estate and completed his last vintage for Isole e Olena in 2022 after 50 years.

While Paolo de Marchi is known for his gift at making incredible Sangiovese, he blends the spicy Canaiolo and just a bit of Syrah into the blend for depth and grip. This wine is about finesse, bringing fruit and acidity together into a wonderfully balanced wine.

Though this a fairly recent project based in Radda in Chianti, Istine’s reputation has quickly risen to the top of the Sangiovese playing field. With rave write-ups in the New York Times, Wine Spectator, and Forbes, winemaker Angela Fronti is proving she has what it takes in a region historically dominated by patrimonial lineage. Angela, who comes from a long line of peasant farmers, left Tuscany to study enology but ultimately decided to return and put down roots in Radda. With some of the highest elevation holdings in the commune, she farms multiple plots of land creating Cru Level Chianti with a precision rarely seen at this price point. Without a doubt a producer to watch.

This Chianti Classico is some of the delicious Sangiovese we’ve tasted in recent years. The wine is soft and complex with the purity of fruit. The vines come from all over Radda.

Harvested and meticulously selected from Istine’s three top estate vineyards, Istine, Casanova dell'Aia, and Cavarchione, the juice from each vineyard is all fermented seperatley for 12 months in 20hl Slavonian oak casks before blending. Once blended, ‘Levigne’ ages for 12 more months in a 30hl oak casks then spends at least 12 months in the bottle. The soils in these vineyards are mineral rich with limestone and fossil deposits allowing the wine great complexity and the added aging helps to round out the tannin for a supple and lush drinking experience.

Though this a fairly recent property coming out of Chianti, Istine’s reputation has quickly risen to the top of the Sangiovese playing field. The producer has even been likened to that of Montevertine, the most sought after Chianti Classico producer. Istine is located in the commune of Radda along with Montevertine and Carleone. Because Istine is new to the scene, the wines don’t have the demand quite yet. Their property is perched on a high hill overlooking both Radda and Panzano.
