While many vignerons in Sancerre continue with conventional winemaking, Gerard continues to implement organic farming and making thoughtful, traditional Sancerre.

This wine brings together the best of Boulay’s young vine vineyards in the small village of Chavignol. They are planted in the kimmeridgian soils that make the appellation’s wines so notable, with bracing minerality and citrus high tones.

From 35-40 year old vines just next to the Boulay’s property in the village of Chavignol comes this striking Pinot Noir. The aromatics of this wine are quite remarkable, especially with a slight chill and a bit of breathing. It’s aged in 300 liter casks and makes a wonderful alternative to Premier Cru Red Burgundy.

Michel Vattan, Sancerre O.P. 2022

Starting out very small with just 2 hectares of vines in 1930, Roger and Andrée Vattan staked an early claim to some of the most special territory in Sancerre. As the names of their bottles go, they're named after the soil types. The O.P refers to grapes that were grown on Oxfordian limestone soils and Portlandian soils. Their son, Michel, jumped on the expansion wagon that occurred in Sancerre in the 1970s, adding 7 hectares to the vineyard total. With no heir in sight, Michel groomed Nathalie and Pascal Joulin to take over the vineyard at his retirement in 2008. Winegrowers in Sancerre weathered a difficult spring frost in 2017, losing about 15-20% of total potential production. The balance of the vintage was blessed with enough sunshine and water to counterbalance the early growing season challenges

Michel Vattan, Sancerre Rose 2020

Variety: Pinot Noir

Michel Vattan is one of the best examples of how a winemaker can begin with next to nothing, grow slowly, and age well over time. He grows mostly Sauvignon Blanc for which Sancerre is famous, though Sancerre does produce a little Pinot Noir which is often made into a fresh dry rosé.

The Sancerre Rosé is made completely from Pinot Noir. It is made in the direct press method which allows the wine to have similar freshness to the classic Sancerre, but retain the aromatics of Pinot Noir. Even though Pinot Noir is typically a later ripening grape, Vattan actually harvests earlier to retain freshness in the wine.

Pascal Cotat, Chavignol 'La Grande Cote' 2021

There is some rivaling energy in the Cotat family. The two brothers, Francis and Paul, both made the same wine in the same facility, but under their own names. The entire purpose of this was for the brothers to each have their own name on their wines. Eventually, the French government intervened and declared the production needed to be separated. Pascal and Francois, both the sons of the original brothers, thus decided to separate their winemaking facilities. Pascal opted to make his own new facilities and subsequently makes unique wines that are slightly riper and more minerally than his brother’s. The sites used are the most prized spots in Sancerre.

“La Grand Côte” means the big coast reiterating the incredibly steep hillsides. It is a monopole vineyard with 45 year old vines owned by the Cotat cousins.

What’s most impressive about Tinel-Blondelet is the fact that Annick represents the twelfth generation of winemaking; their family has been dutifully wine growing for more than 400 years in the Loire Valley. Ferdnand Blondelet, the previous generation, is to thank for much of the identity of the winery today. Fifty years ago, he had been endeavoring in farming in the area of Pouilly sur Loire when he decided to focus solely on viticulture. He later acquired more land in Sancerre, which gave the family another appellation in which to bottle their wine. Fernand then became the first of the Tinels to create a wine-tasting cellar. Today, Tinel continues the tradition of the family coupled with her authenticity; both traits exude themselves in the wines.

This is Pinot Noir from 40 year old vines of flint and limestone soils. The wine is pressed directly, resulting in a very pale pink. The wine is then produced the same as a white wine, and drinks like one, too. It is fresh, minerally, and soft with surprising length.
