At first glance, “Ashes and Diamonds” only brushes the surface of what the winery truly represents. The story—or journey rather—begins in the autumn of 2013 when Kashy Khaledi (son of winemaker Darioush Khaledi) was a creative media executive at Capitol Records, the “ideal job.” In the midst of a lengthy creative stump, Khaledi would often turn to old films for inspiration. He found one that shifted the course of his life—the 50s Polish film Ashes and Diamonds. A dream started to take shape; Khaledi threw himself into researching the viticulture and enology that shaped California’s wine culture. His quest for joint ventures began; he teamed up with Steve Matthiasson and Diana Snowden, farming vineyards in Napa Valley in the pursuit of balanced wine.

Bachelet-Monnot, Maranges Rouge 1er 'La Fussiere' 2020

Variety: Pinot Noir

Brothers Marc and Alexandre Bachelet are known as some of Burgundy’s finest talents. Only starting in 2005, they used land holdings that belonged to their grandfather, and then their father after that. They have an array of seriously enviable plots strewn between Puligny, Chassagne, Meursault, and Santenay, all in the south of the Cote de Beaune. While they’re known primarily for their structured and precise Chardonnays, their Pinot Noir are equally charming and intensely aromatic. Even for being so new to Burgundy, these brothers have quickly moved their way among Burgundy’s most elite producers.

Neil Martin of Vinous has proclaimed the Bachelet wines coming out of the Maranges Premier Crus “represent some of the best values of the entire Cote d’Or… and if I were a millionaire, I would still buy them.” Maranges is a small appellation in the south of the Cote de Beaune. “La Fussiere” touts 50 year old vines while also being the highest elevation vineyard in the entire appellation. The wine ages in smaller barrels, 20% of which are new.

Benedicte & Stephane Tissot, Trousseau Amphore 2020

Variety: Trousseau

Bénédicte et Stéphane Tissot are a powerhouse winemaking couple based out of Arbois in the Jura region. Their perspective plays vital to the style of their wine. They favor natural wines as opposed to industrial ones, and wines that show off nature’s gifts versus winemaking. Their wines have been certified biodynamic by Demeter. Many of Jura’s wines go for an oxidative style; their wines are not this. They prefer a reductive style, the opposite of the local style. Their love is shown by their passion and their drive to make several different wines.

Considered by many to be restlessly innovative, Stephane takes a classic Jura variety, Trousseau, and allows the fruit to macerate for three months in amphora clay jars. Clay allows wine to oxidize more while it ages, as opposed to steel or traditional barrels. Due to the nature of these regional oxidative practices, the use of clay certainly makes sense.

You would think this wine was from the region of Burgundy based on its blend and style, but it is a fresher, possibly softer version coming from similar soil types in the ancient Loire Valley. It is mostly Pinot Noir with a little Gamay added; a Loire version of the Burgundy Passetoutgrain.

Bodegas Vega Sicilia Unico 2007

Every region in Spain produces wine. And while Rioja is its most famous region made from Tempranillo, which may be just as famous, it was the smaller region of Ribera del Duero that made it famous first. If it wasn’t for Vega Sicilia’s recognition of both the 1917 and 1918 vintages at the 1929 World Fair in Barcelona, the reputation of these wines wouldn’t quite be what they are now. Using Tempranillo, then known as a “country wine,” it was then blended with the fruit from Bordeaux vine cuttings. After 1982, the purchase of the Bodega by the Alvarez family shifted the winery towards a modernized hand as well as a welcomed international reputation. Vega Sicilia makes two wines—Unico and the multi-vintage Reserva Especial. Typically the wines are not released until they are ten years old, becoming increasingly difficult to find with each passing year.

The Unico bottles famously undergo a lengthy aging process, ten years being the typical window. 2007 was a colder vintage, thus making a wine more elegant than others, yet still structured. Tempranillo always makes up most of the blend here with Cabernet Sauvignon making up the rest.

Bonavita, Faro DOC 2017

Variety: Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, and Nocera

The small holding of Bonavita has been in the family of Giovanni Scarfone for more than 100 years in the small region of Faro, which is northeast of Etna. After studying agriculture at school in Bologna, Giovanni opted to return and put to practice what he had learned. He converted his vineyards to organic, even though his father and grandfather never used chemicals anyway. Before the 2006 vintage, only the family consumed the wines made on the farm. The vineyards sit atop a large hill in the town of Faro. Lower down the hill is the family’s garage doubling as a wine cellar. The family creates wines reminiscent of Etna Rosso, although at a lower altitude and with the addition of the Nocera variety to add acidity.

Only 7000 bottles of this wine are made. The fermentation takes place in both oak and steel with a long maceration of the skins anywhere from 20-60 days. The juice ages in a mix of smaller 30 liter oak barrels, steel, and cement for two years, and then another year in the bottle before its release.

Variety: Pinot Noir

Gregoire Bonnet began this estate in 1862. After six generations in this family, the longevity of this wine is going nowhere. The fruit has always been sourced from their own family vineyards strewn across five Premier Cru and Grand Cru villages in the region of Champagne with home base in the village of Chamery. Gregoire was one of the first recoltant manipulants of the village, indicating that he grew his own fruit and bottled it as well. While the family name may have history attached to it, they continue to improve as they now implement organic practices. The name of their domaine has also evolved as Bonnet was the original name, though a woman of the name Ponson, with wine in her blood, married into the Bonnet family.

While the region of Champagne has been known for its sparkling wine since the mid 18th century, it had been known for its still wine before then, in fact, dating back to Roman times. The tables are turning once more; Champagne is shifting its focus to more of a Burgundian style which embodies a return to still wines. Much of this is due to the ever growing issue of climate change, causing fruit to ripen more fully with less acidity, a style not fit for the French bubbly. This version highlights Pinot Noir from the village of Chamery.

Borgo Paglianetto is a relatively new winery born in 2008. In the central area of the Marche region are the vineyards that span the valley between Fabriano and Camerino. The wines come from the production area of Verdicchio di Matelica. This region is a short distance from the Adriatic Sea and dredged in the history of its vine growing. The closed-off Alta Valle dell ‘Esino within Matelica is unique in that it boasts north-south facing vineyards, in turn creating a unique microclimate for these vines. Borgo has a clear mantra of using the historic land to express terroir through quality and passion.

“Terravignata” is a local term referring to the olden times of wealthy Roman landowners who owned land exclusively for growing grape vines. It is a youthful, easy-drinking style. Aged just six months in tanks, and then another two months in bottle, this is a wine meant to consume asap!

The Brovia family has been making wine since the 19th century, then there was a significant period where no wine was made for almost thirty years due to a plethora of reasons like the two world wars, tragedy, and of course the great phylloxera plague. Now onto their fourth generation with force, the Brovia family has come back with more force than ever while making wines that are among the allocated and remain timeless. They have some of the best vineyard sites of Barolo at their fingertips and continue making thoughtful wines in the classic style. Every member of the family plays a part in this historic winemaking entity.

“Rocche” illustrates the elegant side of Barolo, its weight is delicate and light with the charming aromas. “Rocche” is another one of the famed vineyards in the Castiglione Falletto zone. These vines were planted in 1966. This is aged in large French oak barrels for two years before its release. 5500 bottles are produced.

Bruno Giacosa, Barbaresco Asili 2017

Of the great Piedmont producers, Bruno Giacosa is among the elite, if not the best. With vineyards in both Barbaresco and Barolo, he has had his hands in two distinct appellations devoted to Nebbiolo. As with many brilliant minds, the brilliance is contained within the mind of the genius; this could not be more true for Bruno. His career lasted from 1968 until his untimely death in 2018. He created an infinite number of famous wines during this time. For a region dominated by a lengthy history of male winemakers, the Giacosa legend continues with the pleasant turn of his daughter, Bruna, taking over the domain. These are very much allocated wines, representing some of the last vintages that he would have had his hands on before he passed.

The Asili bottle is a single cru Barbaresco that Bruno began bottling back in 1967, yet it was the only cru that was made more than once of all his wines. With the rise of estate bottlings in the 1990s, Bruno opted to purchase some vineyards from Asili instead of relying on purchased fruit. Asili is associated with being one of the most prized vineyard sites in Barbaresco, in addition with its ties to the Giacosa name.

Buisson-Charles, Bourgogne Pinot Noir "Hautes Coutures" 2020

Buisson-Charles has been an insider secret for years, though with a bit of international attention, the wines are now in the spotlight. Michel Buisson is the third generation of this winery, now verging on 80 years old and still tending to the vines. His daughter Catherine and her husband, Patrick, have become the faces of the new generation. The domaine’s approach is modest with less new oak usage and production at 35,000 bottles, though the wines themselves are anything but modest. 12 hectares of vines comprise the estate, most of it based in Meursault from very old vines ranging from 65-100 years old. The style of Buisson Charles is classic and restrained; the wines attest to this in volumes.

This Bourgogne Rouge comes from a couple of parcels located between the villages of Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet from vines averaging over 50 years in age. Ageing is done in barrels, 25% of which are new. This is rich and voluptuous, yet easily enjoyed now or in a few years.

Ca' La Bionda, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico "Vigneti di Ravazzol" 2016

I was introduced to this wine by Christoph Kuenzli, from the famed Le Piane winery in northern Piemonte. Finding a great producer in the hills of Valpolicella can be tough so leaning on friends always helps. There are many regions in Italy that show the detrimental hand of western trends. Ca’La Bionda is located in the historic “classic” zone of the Valpolicella region. Founded in 1902, the family’s focus has always been on the grapes and the vineyard work. They presently cultivate 25 hectares. Alessandro Castellani is the current, fourth-generation winemaker. His wines are held in six-foot-tall oak casks until ready to drink. Certain wines are aged longer than others. But at every step of the way, attention is given to tradition, as opposed to modern, quick winemaking. Alessandro’s wines rarely receive much mainstream press, which is fine by him.

The Ravazzol Amarone is a blend of 70% Corvina, 20% Corvinone and 10% Rondinella from 50-70 year old vines grown on the hillside vineyard of Ravazzol. Immediately after harvest in September and October, the bunches of grapes are placed on cane drying racks until January or February in order to dry out the grapes, concentrating flavors and helping to delivering the unique aromas and structure of Amarone.

Cantalapiedra Viticultores, "Arenisca" Tinta de Toro 2017

Variety: Tinta de Toro, aka... Tempranillo

In the region of Castilla y Leon of western Spain is Rueda. The grapes Verdejo and Tinto de Toro thrive here. In Rueda, there was a transition of conventional winemaking and then a slow progression (by a few) to make more expressive wines with lower intervention. The Cantalapiedras family dates back to the 19th century in the Rueda, with each generation bringing something new. There was a transition of conventional farming and selling fruit to finally bottling their own wines in 2014. There was another transition of making organic and biodynamic farming a priority. Manuel is the lead of the current generation, making wines both single vineyard and entry level.

This bottle is named “Arenisca” which means sandstone. It is made from Tinta de Toro, which is Rueda’s name for the Tempranillo grape. “Paraje Los Panaderos” is the name of the vineyard in Toro where this wine comes from. This site is among the highest elevation in the area. There is 30% stem inclusion for added structure and it spends 11 months in used French oak. While many Toro wines are very tannic, this bottle is balanced.

Marilena Barbera is proprietor and winemaker at Cantine Barbera, a boutique winery located in Menfi, on the Southwest coast of Sicily. Her family has been grape producers for three generations. From her grandfather who planted the first indigenous vineyards in the early 1920’s to her father who walked in his parent’s footsteps and selected the grape varieties which would best adapt to the land’s micro-climatic conditions. Her commitment is to produce high quality wines only with the grapes grown and selected in their 30 hectares in Tenuta Belicello, only a few steps away from the Mediterranean Sea while continuing to carry on her father’s dream.

This wine is made from 100% Nero d’Avola, a native grape hailing from Sicily that can be found throughout the wine world. Marilena opts for a feminine and sensual approach of this variety instead of the more popular sturdy, masculine styles.

From the beginning, they have truly wanted to have fun in life and to make unadulterated natural wines long before the hipness of the natural wine scene took hold. Recently, they started the three-year process of seeking biodynamic certification. In fact, they have become international icons for the natural wine movement in an area where the climate and soil can make organic practices difficult. They are based in Bourgueil in the Loire Valley and have an impressive spread of vineyards ranging in soils and vine age. One might say the innovative couple is well ahead of the game and doing it with charm and grace.

“Les Perrieres” comes from 40 year-old vines from one of the most prized hillsides in Bourgueil; the Bretons’ greatest red. This Bourgueil is low-yielding due to the 40 year old vines. The wine spends two years in 550 liter barrels, some of which are new.

Cati is an anomaly in the world of natural wine. Not only is she one of two female winemakers on the island of Mallorca, she is also just one of three natural winemakers in a place where winemaking is difficult. While many use the international varieties like Cabernet and Syrah to make their wines noticed by the world, Cati made a firm decision to use indignenous varieties that are lighter in style, reflecting the terroir of Mallorca. It shows just how focused Cati is as she not only is a single mother with a winery to run, additionally she flew back and forth from Barcelona to Mallorca daily while training as a somm. Her work ethic is unparalleled.

The Escursac grape variety was only just revived in 2006 in Mallorca after years and years of having been wiped out by phylloxera. The fruit is a combination of both estate and purchased fruit. The wines ages between steel, amphora, and used French oak barrels.
