Pierre Morey, Meursault 2022
Add something extra ▼
Variety: Chardonnay
Pierre Morey is a long-standing figure in Meursault, with his family farming in the village since the early nineteenth century. After years as régisseur at Domaine Leflaive, Pierre focused his attention on both his own domaine and the négociant project Morey-Blanc, bringing with him decades of experience in organic and biodynamic viticulture. The domaine formally converted to biodynamics in the late 1990s and has remained committed to manual vineyard work, careful soil management, and low yields.
Today, Pierre’s daughter Anne Morey plays a central role in the running of the domaine. She oversees vineyard operations, cellar decisions, and long-term planning, ensuring continuity of the biodynamic framework while refining parcel selection and tracking vineyard performance year over year. The domaine’s holdings span key Meursault climats along with parcels in Monthelie, Pommard, and Puligny-Montrachet. Burgundy writers consistently note the Morey family’s disciplined approach to farming and the estate’s long record of careful, methodical winemaking rooted in traditional practices.
The fruit for this wine is sourced from several estate-owned parcels located primarily in the northern and central sections of Meursault, including plots near Les Corbins, Les Chaumes, Les Narvaux (depending on the year’s blending decisions), and lower-slope vines positioned between Meursault’s premier cru band and the village. These sites share limestone-based soils with varying amounts of clay, gravel, and shallow topsoil. Parcels at slightly higher elevation offer thinner soils and cooler conditions, while lower parcels sit on deeper clay with stronger water retention. This mix is intentional, giving the domaine a broad representation of Meursault’s core geology each year.
Vines are farmed biodynamically and harvested by hand. Whole-cluster pressing is followed by native-yeast fermentation in barrel. Élèvage takes place in a combination of older barrels with a restrained percentage of new oak, generally between 10 and 20 percent depending on availability for that vintage. Lees work is kept minimal, and each parcel remains separate during the first part of élevage before being blended according to how the components evolve. The goal is to maintain a consistent expression of the village while respecting the differences between the individual plots that supply the wine annually.
