The Maccan family has sustained three generations of winemakers in Friuli Grave, a region located in the northeastern area of Italy. The owner, Stefano Maccan, sums up the family’s vision with this quote, “My family’s passion for farming grew inside me until it became something more than mere curiosity and turned into determination... the determination to finally produce my own family wine.” Even though the Maccan family had been making wine dating back to 1788, it wasn’t until 2012 that Tenuta Maccan was an established domain. The Maccan team pays homage to tradition while innovating with their organic and certified sustainable farming techniques.

This Cabernet Franc is aged in stainless steel for 8-10 months for a purely fruity, yet grassy expression of this variety. This is elegant and velvety with good acidity and finish. Enjoy this with any cured meats or game meat.

Miani, Chardonnay 2022

Spearheaded by Enzo Pontoni, the Miani bottlings are some of the most thought provoking wines coming out of the Northern Italian region of Friuli. Considering himself nothing other than a farmer, Enzo comes from a long line of sharecroppers, and has been working in a farm setting since childhood. One day, while working on a mobile bottling unit, Enzo asked a winemaker is he could teach him something about vineyard work to which the winemaker responded "The only way to learn is to do it." Taking to both books and the vineyards, Enzo learned everything he could about making wine, and soon started getting recognition from the local communities for the quality of his expressions. Today Enzo produces solely single vineyard and single parcel blends, believing that the sanctity of the land should be preserved. Exceptionally small yield, as he refuses to compromise his belief in entirely natural farming and vinification, these wines are as delicious as they are hard to come by. Soft spoken and exceptionally humble, Enzo lives just steps away from his vineyards. He is rumored to have not left Friuli for over 20 years, preferring to be out with his grapes. The name "Miani" is his mother's maiden name.

After hand harvest these grapes undergo gentle extraction before barrel fermentation in ~40% new oak. Coming from the Zitelle vineyard this Chardonnay has a prominent mineral backbone.

In the short list of producers coming out of Friuli, Ronco del Gnemiz is at the top of it. Period. Described as “pure renderings of nature,” these wines are an exceptional homage to their distinct terroir. Serena Pazzolo is the main face behind Gnemiz, though her husband Christian Patat, and their sons help to manage the vineyards and facilities as well. The family acquired the property in the 1960s, though like many of those in winemaking families–it took the drive and vision of a singular person to move the needle forward. Serena is known for the integrity of her biodynamic farming. Each vineyard is managed individually, from pruning to treatments to harvest, allowing for very individual expressions from plots located right next to one another. Making ‘cru’ level wines from separate vineyards is just one way Gnemiz stands out in the region. Utilizing compost made with local herbs, intervention is kept to a minimum and immense patience is practiced in the cellar. The wines are never rushed resulting in wines of uncompromising quality.

The grapes come from a small parcel in the Rosazzo hills planted in 2001 with selection massale. The wine sees 9 months in barrique before bottling.

Ronco del Gnemiz, Sauvignon Sol 2022

In the short list of producers coming out of Friuli, Ronco del Gnemiz is at the top of it. Period. Described as “pure renderings of nature,” these wines are an exceptional homage to their distinct terroir. Serena Pazzolo is the main face behind Gnemiz, though her husband Christian Patat, and their sons help to manage the vineyards and facilities as well. The family acquired the property in the 1960s, though like many of those in winemaking families–it took the drive and vision of a singular person to move the needle forward. Serena is known for the integrity of her biodynamic farming. Each vineyard is managed individually, from pruning to treatments to harvest, allowing for very individual expressions from plots located right next to one another. Making ‘cru’ level wines from separate vineyards is just one way Gnemiz stands out in the region. Utilizing compost made with local herbs, intervention is kept to a minimum and immense patience is practiced in the cellar. The wines are never rushed resulting in wines of uncompromising quality.

Sol is harvested from 30 year old vines planted as selection massale from other of the properties top vineyards. Grapes are pressed whole cluster and fermented in used barrels and 650 liter wooden vats with no battonage.

Venica & Venica, Collio Friulano 2022

Daniele Venica purchased the plot Ronco del Ceró where he first planted Sauvignon in 1930. Three generations later, great grandson Giampaolo has taken over the estate, a true testimony to the tradition of keeping winemaking in the family. Venica now has 40 hectares all within the DOC—Denomination of Controlled Origin—of Collio. Sons Gianni (agronomist), Giorgio (cellar master), and grandson Giampaolo oversee operations supplemented by help from several family members. They believe their traditions must be enhanced through continuous research and innovation, but a relationship with nature is of utmost importance.

Venica is known for their textural and highly aromatic whites that see little or no wood. Friulano is the name of the variety in this bottling, underlying the strong connection to the area of Friuli. It was formerly called “Tocai,” but too often became confused with the Tokaji grape of Hungary, and so in 2008 the European Community (Hungary and Italy) came to an agreement to ban the use of “Tocai” in Italy.

WINE SHIPPING VIA COMMON CARRIER

Hart & Cru is happy to engage the services of a common carrier on behalf of you/the customer. However, upon purchase, ownership of and title to all alcoholic beverages passes from Hart & Cru to you/the buyer in the State of Ohio. In the case of shipments outside of Ohio, the sole responsibility for complying with local regulations lies with the customer. By placing an order on this site and selecting shipping, you authorize Hart & Cru to act on your behalf to engage a common carrier to deliver your order to you.

All ‘Ground Shipping’ orders placed after 12pm on Wednesday will be shipped on Monday the following week in order to avoid bottles being held in non-temperature controlled facilities over the weekend. Orders placed before noon with 2-Day Air selected will be shipped the same day or on the date requested. We are happy to store your order for you until you are able to receive delivery. Please include note specifying desired ship date or reach out to us at thecru@hartandcru.com for any other requests.

The cost of shipping varies depending on which shipping option the buyer selects, as well as destination and number of bottles. The appropriate shipping rates will be calculated at checkout.

All orders will be sent with a 21+ signature as is legally required. The carrier delivering your order will be unable to leave the package on your front door, back porch, etc. without sign-off. Please ensure someone is home to receive. In the event that a shipment cannot be delivered due to an incorrect address provided by the purchaser, or after three delivery attempts by the carrier, Hart & Cru reserves the right to charge the purchaser the applicable carrier fee for rerouting to an alternative address or re-shipping to the same address.

Venica & Venica, Merlot 2020

Daniele Venica purchased the plot Ronco del Ceró where he first planted Sauvignon in 1930. Three generations later, great grandson Giampaolo has taken over the estate, a true testimony to the tradition of keeping winemaking in the family. Venica now has 40 hectares all within the DOC—Denomination of Controlled Origin—of Collio. Sons Gianni (agronomist), Giorgio (cellar master), and grandson Giampaolo oversee operations supplemented by help from several family members. They believe their traditions must be enhanced through continuous research and innovation, but a relationship with nature is of utmost importance.

Friuli-Venezia Giulia is known for its white wines, though Merlot has made a name for itself as the most popular red wine—it’s as if Merlot had originated there. It is identified on wine labels by name, not as a blend or by a regional name. This Merlot, like the other Venica wines, comes from a vineyard within the DOC of Collio. It is aged in barrel for 13 months.
