Gaja, Brunello Di Montalcino Pieve Restituta ‘Sugarile’ 2018
Regular price $300.00 Save $-300.00Variety: Sangiovese
Gaja is still among the most famed winemakers of the world today. Started by Giovanni Gaja in 1859, their legend is still going strong five generations later. Though each new member of the family brought with them a sense of excellence and attention to detail, it was really Angelo who brought the family name into the international spotlight, turning heads and garnering a reputation for pushing winemaking to new heights. Most notably is the family’s decision to use barrique with their 1975 Barbaresco cuvee at a time when everyone was using large barrels for aging. Taking this a step further, he began bottling many of his Nebbiolo as single vineyards, and crucial steps were made in the vineyard to yield better fruit. Today, Angelo carries on their commitment to excellence through their projects in Barolo, Barbaresco, and Tuscany.

Pian dell'Orino, Brunello di Montalcino 'Vigneti del Versante' 2015
Regular price $165.00 Save $-165.00Variety: Sangiovese
While the winemakers of Pian dell’Orino are not Tuscany natives, owners Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Hendrik Erbach are producing some of the very best Montalcino available on the market right now. Caroline, who was born in Sudtirol, managed a renaissance castle near to where she was the primary caretaker of an enormous, six hundred year-old grapevine (the oldest and largest existing vine in all of Europe,) before pivoting into winemaking. Caroline’s partner, Jan, hailing from Karlsruhe, Germany, not far from the Pfalz region, studied both viticulture and oenology before working as an oenologist in France. The two met and realized their passions and dreams aligned well. Buying an estate in Montalcino, together they grow purely Sangiovese. With vineyard sites falling within some of the most prized parcels in the appellation, the duo produces wine that shines not only because of its exceptional terroir but because of the meticulous attention to detail payed both in the vineyards and cellar. Pian dell'Orino refuses to cut corners and farms sustainability in order to ensure not only best practice in winemaking but also in how they effect the world around them.
A wine sourced entirely from the Scopeta vineyard. This wine macerated for four weeks before being drawn off, twice as long as the Rosso. It then ages for 42 months in large barrels.

Poggio di Sotto, Brunello di Montalcino 2018
Regular price $300.00 Save $-300.00Variety: Sangiovese
Producing Brunellos of the highest quality, so elegant and subtle they’re often described as ‘Burgundian’, Poggio di Sotto commands a great amount of respect in a category of fierce competition. Vineyards at three different altitudes grow exclusively Sangiovese Grosso, all of which qualifies for the Brunello appellation and the plots are cooled by near-constant breezes that, among other things, eliminate any necessity to use pesticides. The twenty to twenty-five-year-old vines are hand-harvested which, along with the use of indigenous yeasts, reflects a philosophy toward production at Poggio di Sotto which focuses on sustainable farming, and to let the terroir dictate the style of the wine as much as possible. This choice is further exemplified by ageing the wines in Slavonian oak barrels and bottling unfiltered. A powerful Brunello from a top-grade producer that nevertheless showcases finesse over strength.
This Brunello has a lengthy vinification journey before its release, which only extends its life in the cellar. The Sangiovese ages in small oak barrels for 30-35 days. Next it will age in even smaller Slavonian oak barrels for 58 months, and finally another eight months in bottle before release. This bottle can cellar easily for years to come.
