Pian dell'Orino, Brunello di Montalcino "Bassolino di Sopra" 2012

The winemakers of Pian dell’Orino are not natives to Tuscany, nor did they know one another before collaborating to make Sangiovese in Montalcino. Caroline was born in the Südtirol in a large Renaissance castle where she managed the family property. Amongst her duties at the property was an enormous, six hundred year-old grapevine that is the oldest and largest existing vine in all of Europe. Caroline’s partner, Jan, was born in the city of Karlsruhe in Germany, not far from the Pfalz region, studying both viticulture and oenology in Germany. He then worked for several years as an oenologist in France before meeting Caroline and moving to Montalcino. Together they grow purely Sangiovese.

This wine is not produced every year; it was made in 2012 and 2015. It’s a special bottle embracing the standards of Pian dell’Orino’s Brunello di Montalino, with a little more attention.

Vietti, Barolo Ravera 2015

Even though the Vietti family has been making wine for four generations, the pivoting moment did not come until Luciana Vietti married the artist connoisseur and winemaker Alfredo Currado. Historically, Barolo wine was a volume wine, often using as much fruit as possible sourced from multiple vineyards. Alfredo was one of the first to make a Barolo cru wine—that is sourcing all the fruit from one vineyard. He was also responsible for the rediscovery of the Arneis variety, which was almost extinct. Alfredo and Luciana began traveling overseas in the 1960s and were one of the first wineries in that area to export to America. Their son and his wife, Luca and Elene Currado, continue to add more crus to the Vietti label, and now make several white and red wines each vintage.

Ravera is the name of this southwest facing vineyard in the Novello area of Barolo. The wine spends over a year on lees and aged for about 30 months in Slovenian oak. Vine age is average of 26 years with some planted in 1935.

Pierre Peters, Champagne, 'Cuvee Speciale, Les Chetillons 2013

Starting in 1858, the Pierre Peters domain began. At the time the fruit was sold off all to trading businesses. Fast forward to 1919, Camille Peters, the third generation at the time, begun to harvest, handle, and bottle the wine himself. In fact, he was one of the first in the region to do this himself; most growers sold their grapes. After 150 years of maintaining their traditional Blanc de Blanc Champagnes, a rosé was produced in 2009. Grower Champagne producer Pierre Péters has developed an international following as one of the best producers in Côte des Blancs. Today Pierre Peters is one of the largest producers of grower Champagne.

"Les Chétillons" is the name of the estate's special vintage Champagne which refers to a beautiful "lieu-dit", or a place found in the Grand Cru village of le Mesnil sur Oger. Divided into three plots of 45+ year old vines, each parcel is vinified separately and blended to produce a single vineyard vintage. All the power and the minerality of the Mesnil's calcareous soil is expressed in this wine produced since 1971. With its reputation grown world wine, Les Chétillons is now synonymous as one of the most beautiful pieces of land in Champagne.
