The texture of the stunning 2018 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is partially developed by Arnaud's labor-intensive technique of cutting out the main stem of the bunches used during the whole cluster fermentation. This parcel in Bonnes Mares is from the middle section of the Grand Cru closer to the Chambolle-Musigny side.

When Sophie Confuron took over for father Jean-Jacques after he fell ill, the vines were superbly located, but the cellars were outdated. While in wine school, Sophie Confuron met her future husband Alain Meunier. They decided to make wine together in 1985. Sophie enjoys joking and mentions that she married Alain for love since he did not have any vineyards of his own. They have 8.5 hectares of vineyards over fourteen appellations. Every last bottle is sold on a strict allocation basis internationally. Overwhelming demand for their Pinot Noirs have led the couple to create a second super-negociant operation; they buy grapes with the same standard as the other wines, and sold under the Fery-Meunier label.

Thierry Allemand is a winemaker of cult status, due mostly to his beautiful Syrahs of the Northern Rhone region of Cornas. Thierry is also a man of humble, monastic feats. Little by little, he was learning the secrets of the trade under the wing of Robert Michel, who taught him terraced farming and non interventionist winemaking. Thierry started acquiring parcels, many of which were abandoned and falling into disrepair. He began replanting these vineyards and reinforced the terraces all by hand. It took him fifteen years before he could dedicate himself completely; meanwhile, he kept bread on the table as an electrician. He was a legend before he’d even committed to the wines fully. Thierry is committed to minimal use of sulphur, sometimes not even using it at all. He makes just two wines: “Reynard” is made of 34-90 year-old vines from the Reynard vineyard; “Les Chaillots” uses 5-40 year-old vines from Les Chaillots vineyard just across the valley.

Champagne Doyard's roots trace back to the 17th century in the small village of Vertus in the Cotes des Blancs appellation of Champagne. Yannick Doyard took the helm in 1979 and his son Guillaume has since taken over. They farm from the family's original domaine in Vertus, as well as sourcing their fruit from several Grand Cru villages. The family's focus on viticulture includes biodynamic farming. Plots are worked by horse and the yields are kept low making for a wine intense in style. Their Champagnes also spend at least 48 months on their lees. The goal of Champagne Doyard is to make the most expressive terroir-driven wines possible. For this, we love their attention to detail.

This exquisite Grand Cru bottle draws its fruit from more than one Grand Cru village. Two thirds of the fruit is Chardonnay coming from Avize and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger; the other third is Pinot Noir which hails from Ay Grand Cru. This wine is aged older Burgundy barrels and spends 120 months (ten years) on the lees before it was finally released at the end of 2018. It is concentrated and intense, full of energy and raciness!

Let’s just state that the Chave family has passed the vineyards and winemaking traditions down generation to generation since 1481, so, yeah, nothing else needs to be said. Jean-Louis is now the 16th generation winemaker and the family has more holdings on the famed hill of Hermitage than any other producer. But for the last 15 years the family has been rebuilding old terraces on the banks of the Rhone in the nearby region of Saint-Joseph. They are working to bring back a vineyard site that dates to the early 1900’s to show a different side of Syrah. This site expresses the soil mixture of granite and clay, and shows the “wildness” of the terroir.

Starting in 1858, the Pierre Peters domain began. At the time the fruit was sold off all to trading businesses. Fast forward to 1919, Camille Peters, the third generation at the time, begun to harvest, handle, and bottle the wine himself. In fact, he was one of the first in the region to do this himself; most growers sold their grapes. After 150 years of maintaining their traditional Blanc de Blanc Champagnes, a rosé was produced in 2009. Grower Champagne producer Pierre Péters has developed an international following as one of the best producers in Côte des Blancs. Today Pierre Peters is one of the largest producers of grower Champagne.

A very Rare Champagne coming from the best fruit from the Grand Cru vineyard “Les Chétillons” in the Cote de Blancs from the village of Le-mesnil-sur-oger with a unique story. The Cuvée “L’étonnant Monsieur Victor” (“The Surprising Mister Victor”) champions their son, Victor, for his passion of art and painting. Inspired by the Japanese Neo-pop artist and painter Takashi Murakami and 19th Century biblical painting “Caïn Fleeing with his Family” by Fernand Cormon, Victor chose to add his own twist of Cormon with Manga graphics and Pop Art style vivid and acid colors, soon after, creating several more energetic and fun pieces known as the MK series.

In 1975 this estate was established by Chantal and her husband. Today the children now oversee the Domain and the 35 acres of organic vineyards located in the Cote de Beaune and the Cote de Nuits. The focus of the estate has always been the fruit and the farming practices. Once the fruit is harvested there is very little intervention in the winemaking. This embodies the philosophy of the family and their desire to express the place. Many preach this, but then produce wines that are manipulated with oak or other tones. These wines have elegant texture, purity of fruit and beautiful minerality. Fifteen-plus years of organic farming of course contributes to this as do the estate's slow fermentation with wild yeasts, minimal pigeage and bottling without fining or filtration. Another factor in the subtle fruit and terroir expression in these wines is the careful use of sulfur-dioxide. Some of the bottlings are drinking well in their youth, others will benefit from some time in the cellar.

Thierry started acquiring parcels, many of which were abandoned and falling into disrepair. He began replanting these vineyards and reinforced the terraces all by hand. It took him fifteen years before he could dedicate himself completely; meanwhile, he kept bread on the table as an electrician. He was a legend before he’d even committed to the wines fully. Thierry is committed to minimal use of sulphur, sometimes not even using it at all. He makes just two wines: “Reynard” is made of 34-90 year-old vines from the Reynard vineyard; “Les Chaillots” uses 5-40 year-old vines from Les Chaillots vineyard just across the valley.

In 1975 this estate was established by Chantal and her husband. Today the children now oversee the Domain and the 35 acres of organic vineyards located in the Cote de Beaune and the Cote de Nuits. The focus of the estate has always been the fruit and the farming practices. Once the fruit is harvested there is very little intervention in the winemaking. This embodies the philosophy of the family and their desire to express the place. Many preach this, but then produce wines that are manipulated with oak or other tones. These wines have elegant texture, purity of fruit and beautiful minerality. Fifteen-plus years of organic farming of course contributes to this as do the estate's slow fermentation with wild yeasts, minimal pigeage and bottling without fining or filtration. Another factor in the subtle fruit and terroir expression in these wines is the careful use of sulfur-dioxide. Some of the bottlings are drinking well in their youth, others will benefit from some time in the cellar.

Domaine Chandon de Briailles is quickly becoming one of the very finest to be found anywhere in the Côte D’Or; classically styled, terroir-driven Burgundies that age brilliantly. This historic estate of Domaine Chandon de Briailles was established in 1834. In 1988, Claude de Nicolay took over from her mother as winemaker—a mother to daughter legacy, not often seen in winemaking. She crafts traditionally styled wines from one of the Cote d’Or’s best terroirs. Claude’s management has been fully biodynamic since 2005 and organic since 1998. The winemaking incorporates a large percentage of whole cluster fermentation, making quality “vin de garde”—or wines meant to keep. Île de Vergelesses is considered by many to be the Grand Cru of the Premier Crus of Pernand-Vergelesses. In great vintages, this 1er Cru can even rival that of Corton Charlemagne for complexity and finesse.

Produced by a family with a history dating back to 1640, this wine has quite the story. Today, Olivier Lamy guides the family estate into the limelight with the hand of a winemaker who has been trained by tradition to produce world-class wines every year. Before taking the reins of the family estate from his father Hubert in 1996, Olivier learned from his family while also spending time with Méo-Camuzet, a sought-after name by many collectors. Olivier stopped selling fruit to local négociants in 1997, choosing instead to divest underperforming sites and focus only on his best parcels. This decision left 16.5 hectares in the estate’s holdings today, and the quality is the best it has ever been.

Alain Voge, Cornas "Les Vielles Fontaines" 2015

The wines of Domaine Alain Voge have helped to shape and evolve history of the northern Rhone appellation. Alain began working with his father at just seventeen years, deciding to remain in the Cornas region with his father’s vines. The wines were sold in barrels until the 50’s, then were transitioned to bottling in 1957-58. In the 60s, vineyards were lost due to new housing built; the Voge family then began renovating several higher parcels, which in turn proved as better conditions for vines. In an effort to learn more about other French wines, Alain would visit Leon every two weeks, meeting sommeliers and chefs who would introduce him to other regional wines. Doing this, he forged links with these professionals. Alain’s wines soon began appearing in some of the finest restaurants of Lyon and Paris. The domain became certified organic and biodynamic in 2016.

While all bottles from Alain Voge are special, this one is particularly a standout. Only made in exceptional vintages, this bottle comes from the locality of "La Fontaine" in Cornas. The vines are from a granite-dominated terroir that produces wines of intense complexity and age-ability. The Syrah is aged in large barrels for 24 months, some of this oak is new. Only 2400 bottles were produced.

The family is an old cooperage, barrel-making family that has 13 hectares of vines. Jean-Baptiste Pillot, the founder, decided to work full-time in the vines instead. Four generations later, Thierry, the newest family member to take over the estate, is a dynamic personality that is pushing quality higher and higher. Most of Thierry’s time is spent in the vineyards, as he is a non-interventionist in the cellar, though he does use a discrete amount of new wood. The family are artists in the cellar when it comes to oak usage; it is very well integrated into the wines.

This site is one of the top Premier Cru sites in Chassagne. The vines are 60+ years old and has a very rocky topsoil. This is aged in large barrels, 10% of which is new, for one year followed by six months in tank.

Starting in 1858, the Pierre Peters domain began. At the time the fruit was sold off all to trading businesses. Fast forward to 1919, Camille Peters, the third generation at the time, begun to harvest, handle, and bottle the wine himself. In fact, he was one of the first in the region to do this himself; most growers sold their grapes. After 150 years of maintaining their traditional Blanc de Blanc Champagnes, a rosé was produced in 2009. Grower Champagne producer Pierre Péters has developed an international following as one of the best producers in Côte des Blancs. Today Pierre Peters is one of the largest producers of grower Champagne.

"Les Chétillons" is the name of the estate's special vintage Champagne which refers to a beautiful "lieu-dit", or a place found in the Grand Cru village of le Mesnil sur Oger. Divided into three plots of 45+ year old vines, each parcel is vinified separately and blended to produce a single vineyard vintage. All the power and the minerality of the Mesnil's calcareous soil is expressed in this wine produced since 1971. With its reputation grown world wine, Les Chétillons is now synonymous as one of the most beautiful pieces of land in Champagne.

Remi Jobard, Meursault 1er Cru Le Poruzot-Dessus 2018

This property Valerie and I visited for the first time in 2010 and we have been drinking the wines ever since. The Jobard name is a powerful one in Meursault, and Remi took full control of this estate in 1996 from his father. When this transition took place, he found himself taking over Meursault and Puligny-based Bourgogne Blancs. The domaine has not used herbicides or pesticides since 1994; they are certified organic. Tasting these wines are a "sensual tour of rock and vine."

This Premier Cru plot is just half a hectare located in the upper 'Dessus' portion of Poruzots. These vines are more than 60 years old and have more limestone in this section of the parcel. The wine is aged in 50% barrique, 20% of which is new, and 50% in large older foudre.
