Now onto the third generation, Hajo Becker is now owner and winemaker, continuing his father and grandfather’s legacy. After tasting with cellar master Hermann Neuser’s dry wines back in the 1970s, Hajo became instantly enamored with them. This was during a time when Germany was still known internationally for its Liebfraumilch, and other sweet swill. With his first vintage in 1971, he began focusing on dry Rieslings, which lost him many of his customers. All levels of vineyard care are at the forefront of importance to Becker, but he won’t talk about it; he thinks and he works.

Julian Haart, Riesling 1000L 2021

Julian Haart only began his first vintage in 2010, only after studying under a couple of some of the greatest winemakers in Germany, Egon Müller and Klaus Peter Keller. “That’s like learning to draw under da Vinci and Picasso,” says importer Vom Boden, in terms of German winemakers. Julian’s winemaking journey goes hand in hand with his rigorous focus of continuing to better himself. His first plot was adjacent to the grand cru site Ohligsberg. He then continued to purchase more vines in Goldtröpfchen and Schubertslay, both considered “grand cru” sites. Included in one of these sites is a bit of 100-year-old vines that are ungrafted. The wines are an ode to the style of Klaus Peter Keller who has been penned as creating “German Montrachets” according to Jancis Robinson.

This Riesling comes from 25-year-old vines in the grand cru site of Goldtröpfchen. This wine got its name from its 1000 liter foudre barrel that the wine was aged inside. It’s fresh and dry with wonderful minerality.

Before World Wars I and II, excellent dry wine was made in the Rheinhessen, but with postwar economic recovery and mass market consumerism came the debacle of liebfraumilch. This was overly sweet swill exported for some time until the 1980s when several winemakers, led by Weingut Keller, decided they could do much better. The elegant dry Riesling once again made a renaissance and is here to stay for good. Klaus Peter Keller and his family are at the absolute top when it comes to dry riesling from the Rheinhessen in Germany. They create a line of single cru wines from many limestone laiden vineyards there. With each vintage, they express the unique voices of each terroir, whether it be the entry level or the grand cuvee.

If you could garner a compliment from any winemaker on earth, Peter Keller of the Rheinhessen saying "he has the touch" would certainly be welcomed. This was in regards to young winemaker Peter Leipold of Franken, Germany. Peter even worked for Keller for a couple years before going to work in Franken where he began to focus on Silvaner, a rare variety few work with. He has really made a name for himself right out of the gate in a region where few understand the wines and their significance. The wines are pure, electric, and mineral-driven, not unlike Chablis. Be on the lookout for Leipold's wines, he's on the rise.

This Silvaner is completely dry and weightless and unlike any other Silvaner you've had. Some say that this is the best Silvaner on the market; take our word for it. The bottle shaped is derived from field bottles, traditional for Silvaner.

Peter Lauer, Riesling Grand Cru ‘Unterstenberg’ 2021

Peter Lauer is one of the best winemakers in all of Germany. The reality is his style is completely focused. He takes Riesling, one of the most misunderstood grape varieties on the market, and creates wines with serious expression. The wines are textural, focused, and fairly serious. Riesling, for many, is considered sweet, fruity, and playful even, but here it is in a style that finds itself in the same conversation as classified white Burgundy. No one else is making wine like this. So when we say seize the opportunity when his wines are available, do that.

Unterstenberg is a grand cru of the Saar tributary in the Mosel, translating to “under the mountain.” Its placement at the bottom of the hill has absorbed all the minerals that have washed down for centuries, and rarely lacks water; a vineyard sponge if you will. This is one of the most powerful wines Peter makes and made into an almost off-dry style.

According to Vom Boden, the importer of Weingut Ludes, this is the first Mosel estate they’d taken on in nine years. Considering their portfolio is not only mostly German with a heavy hand of Mosel wine already, this says a great deal about the wines of Ludes. The current generation is young Julian Ludes, who works with his uncle, Herman Ludes. This is the Upper Mosel, which is not the popular side of the river valley; the wines there are made in a more abrasive, almost rustic style. It’s a style that was likely more common ages ago; overlooked, but intriguing. There was a time when some Mosel wines verged on fruitier, and often sweeter styles, but the wines of Ludes never faltered. They farm around the village of Thornich with four hectares on the slope of ‘Ritsch,’ a site known for its old vines that can only be worked by hand.

Even though the winery is still in early stages, the project has completely taken off. The couple balances their duties—Konstantin works in the cellar while Alexandra manages the affairs of the estates. They share their love for the vineyard work together, though for them it seems like their life’s joy. They utilize all old vines, un-grafted, with low-yielding fruit. The flora and fauna throughout the vineyards is encouraged to flourish. Their vineyards include some of the steepest and dangerous slate sites. The wines, which often retain a natural residual sugar, are always in balance, singing the praises of the Mosel vines from which they hail.
