Variety: Carignan, Syrah, and Grenache
Husband and wife team Sara Pérez and René Barbier each have noble Priorat winemaking blood running through their veins. (Josep Lluis Pérez of Mas Martinet and René Barbier of Clos Mogador are their respective fathers.) Separate from their lineage, both vignerons have garnered respect through their winemaking partnership. Instead of growing vines in Priorat, like their parent figures, the couple aimed for steeped vineyards in the neighboring Monsant appellation. “Venus” collaborates with four other families that own vines, though it is not a negociant project as the fruit is grown exclusively for Venus. The goddess is their inspiration as they want to “interpret femininity through a bottle of wine.” High ecological standards, poor low-yielding soils, and an impressive partnership yield sensual wines with texture and elegance.
The eponymously named bottle is an annual result of the couple’s search for beauty, reinstating the goddess’ divinity. It is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan done with whole berries and some stem inclusion. “Venus” is aged for 18 months in various large barrels.
