Variety: Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon
Andrea Cortonesi is the identity behind the Uccelliera wines. The story behind the estate deserves further attention. It begins with the Uccelliara wines as part of the Ciacci Piccolomoni estate, which is also located in Montalcino. After perfecting his technique as the cellar master at Ciacci, Andrea made the natural move to purchase the Uccelliara property in order to forge his own path. His first vintage was a small, but mighty 500 bottles in 1991. Then he grew. His vines are tucked away in the hills of Castelnuovo dell’Abate in Montalcino. Andrea does not pull any shortcuts; all vineyard work is done by hand only and the wines are among the cult classics of Tuscany.
While the fruit for “Rapace” is sourced from the Uccelliera vineyards in Castelnuovo dell’Abate (in Montalcino), the wine is in no way classified as such. This is a Super Tuscan; therefore, it is bottled as an IGT Toscana. The base is Sangiovese supplemented with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is aged for 18 months in different French oak barrels, then finishes aging for a minimum of six months in the bottle.
