It began with the mind of Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta when he experimented with a Bordeaux style wine during the period 1921 to 1925. He saw the potential in the gravel based soils in Bolgheri, similar to that of Bordeaux. The wines were not well received as they were accustomed to lighter wines coming from Tuscany, let alone wines that needed aging. Because of this, the Sassicaia wines were consumed privately at the domaine. After seeing the potential of the wines with age, peers encouraged the commercial release of them, and so the first “Super Tuscan” wine was produced in 1968 and released to market in 1971. It was made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Sassicaia Bolgheri became its own Denomination in 2013, a place specializing in the Super Tuscan style. The blend is reminiscent of the styles of Left Bank Bordeaux where Cabernet Sauvignon reigns king. Ageing means at least 18 months in barrel with the remaining time happening in steel. It is one of the most sought after wines in the world, coveted for its complexity and power.
