Variety: Nerello Mascalese
SRC is a small family operation that started in just 2013. Amazingly, the wines are low-production and have just recently become available here in Ohio. It is the force of husband and wife duo, Rori and Cinzia, as well as their daughter, Sandra. This is how SRC gets its name—an acronym of all their names. The project began as a small plot of land of just 0.5 hectares that Rori purchased as a surprise for Cinzia, one that went over rather well as the family continued acquiring land. The identity of Etna comes through in each of SRC’s wines where they showcase the ancient low-yielding vines, the volcanic soils, and the charming Mediterranean spirit. The family uses a careful hand in the cellar, allowing the fruit to shine—no sulfur and minimal oak ageing. We agree with many who say these wines are truly representative of their sense of place more so than any other place in the world.
Nerello Mascalese is Sicily’s answer to Pinot Noir, which lends itself well to making sparkling wine as it were Champagne. The vine in this part of Etna reach 700 meters in elevation and a staggering 50 years in age. This wine is a frizzante, a simple term for sparkling wine, though it does go through a secondary fermentation. The frizzante rosato showcases the potential of Etna’s terroir with its purity of fruit, a streak of minerality, and while perfectly dry, its invigorating personality leaves you wanting more.
