Peter Lauer is one of the best winemakers in all of Germany. The reality is his style is completely focused. He takes Riesling, one of the most misunderstood grape varieties on the market, and creates wines with serious expression. The wines are textural, focused, and fairly serious. Riesling, for many, is considered sweet, fruity, and playful even, but here it is in a style that finds itself in the same conversation as classified white Burgundy. No one else is making wine like this. So when we say seize the opportunity when his wines are available, do that.
A Grand Cru Riesling coming from the forehead, or the ‘Stirn’ of Kupp mountain. The vines have a brutal life at the top of the hill where there’s little rain and strong winds. The roots dive extremely deep to find nutrients making for a profound wine. While there’s certainly residual sugar, the grip and acidity may deceive you.
