In the appellation of Chinon in the Central Loire Valley lies the humble village of Cravant les Coteaux. It is theorized that the “Cru” vineyards of the appellation dwell here. This is where Patrick Lambert farms some of the area's most exciting wines rivaling the more well-known names like Baudry and Pallus. Originally belonging to his grandfather, Patrick took over this estate in 1990. As is often the case for the new generation, he began making the kind of wine that he wanted to. This started with reducing the size of the estate to the best plots so he might focus on quality over quantity. He reduced yields and converted to organic farming. Certification for organic farming came in 2014. His vines range from 19-60 years in age. Everything is hand harvested.
Gourmandise is French for “gluttony,” perhaps referring to the feeling of glutton one might feel after imbibing in a lot of this fresh and fun Cabernet Franc. The vines used are about 20 years in age making for a more intensely fruity wine. The grapes are completely destemmed, giving the wine more perfume and more juiciness. To stay in pursuit of freshness, the bottle is fermented and aged in lined tanks underground in Patrick’s cellar.
