Most of the vineyards are more than 40 years old. Before 1992, when the first wines were produced, the grapes were sold to neighboring farms. The Schmelzer family, originally from Michigan, purchased Monte Bernardi in 2003. As winemaker, Michael has invested “time, love and money in the vineyards, the winery and villa” (www.montebernardi.com). The property was certified biodynamic in 2004.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"\u003eThis medium-bodied wine is fruity and richly complex, with smooth tannins, fresh acidity, and a touch of Tuscan cherry accenting the Bordeaux-grape character of fresh cassis, blackberries and minerality as well as sweet spices from oak aging.
