In the southernmost area of Panzano in Chianti are the vineyards of Tzingana. Many refer to these vines as not only one of the Grand Cru of Chianti but one of the top ten terroirs of Italy. The Monte Bernardi estate itself is ancient, dating back to 1085. The Schmelzer family purchased the estate in 2003, before this the grapes were sold to neighboring farmers. Many of the vines are over 40 years in age, with the addition of olive trees for production of estate olive oil. Michael Schmelzer, the face behind Monte Bernardi, is one to keep an eye on.
The Tzingana is a variation of a Bordeaux blend, though grown in Panzano due to the soil structures being quite similar.
