Variety: Barbera d'Alba
The Monte Bernardi estate dates back to 1085. The property’s vineyards are situated in the hilly, southern-most region of Panzano, an area that has been acknowledged as one of the “Grand Cru” of Chianti Classico. Most of the vineyards are more than 40 years old. Before 1992, when the first wines were produced, the grapes were sold to neighboring farms. The Schmelzer family, originally from Michigan, purchased Monte Bernardi in 2003. As winemaker, Michael has invested “time, love and money in the vineyards, the winery and villa” (www.montebernardi.com). The property was certified biodynamic in 2004.
This liter bottle is a celebration of Italy! It is a new style fashioning of the fiasco bottle, (remember those bottles in the straw basket?) The wine is a newer venture for Monte Bernardi as the Barbera fruit comes from the Alba zone of Piedmont. Since the liter bottle gives you an extra glass, enjoy over dinner with a group.
