Matthiasson, Village Chardonnay No.1 2019Regular price $23.00 Save $-23.00
Steve Matthiasson is a California pioneer. Daring to break Napa tradition, Steve and his wife Jill have planted rare, ancient Italian grapes including Ribolla Gialla and Refosco in their home vineyard – definitely worth an experimental try! As farmers, Steve and Jill recognize that Napa loves Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and all the well-known international grapes. A Matthiasson tasting experience, laid out on the picnic table that separates their home from the winemaking operation (with their dog and at least one son stopping by!) shows instantly how the couple reveres the place they farm together. The Linda Vista vineyard is just across the creek behind their home – according to Steve, one of the classic Chardonnay spots in Napa.
Matthiasson makes a couple Chardonnays, but this one stands out as an ode to Napa in the past, the Napa that garnered attention during the Judgment of Paris back in 1976. It’s an ode to fresh, clean Chardonnay that wasn’t heavily oaked or buttery. It’s an example of what Julia Childs would drink when she was cooking. This is a blend of Chardonnay from different lots that did not make it into the Linda Lista Vineyard bottling. Matthiasson harvests grapes at different periods, some early to retain freshness and acidity. Others are harvested later to allow more texture and richness—the perfect balance. This undergoes a gentle touch of French oak. This is a table wine, but with the same attention to detail as Matthiasson’s other wines.
