While the Luigi Pira estate has been producing wine since the 1950s, they sold the grapes up until 1993. They began cellaring and ageing their own wines shortly thereafter. The family owns 12 hectares of vines with holdings in Serralunga d’Alba’s best vineyard sites. Giampaolo is the head of the second generation of winemaking, where he oversees the cellar, while his father, Luigi, and brother, Romolo, care for their vineyards. They take special care in farming, using only natural products. Within the cellar, minimum doses of sulphur are used only when necessary. The family continues to receive worldwide attention from prestigious press.
This Nebbiolo comes from four different vineyards within the commune of Serralunga d’Alba in Barolo. While this is by no means a single vineyard Barolo, it still shows a definite sense of place. The vines range from 20-60 years old. The wine spends 24 months in small oak casks before release. About 1000 cases are produced each year.
