Elena is not only one of the most important winemakers in Italy, but also of skin contact wine. In northwestern Emilia-Romagna is the ancient wine estate of La Stoppa near the Trebbia River and just west of Parma. Elena took over for her father, and decidedly changed the direction of the estate. While he had experimented with Bordeaux varieties that were planted post-phylloxera, Elena decided to move in a new, but traditional direction. From then on, she planted Barbera and Bonarda for reds and Malvasia and Trebbiano for whites, each of which are well-suited to the hot climate. She farms biodynamically, intervenes minimally in the cellar, and often allows her wines to age for several years before release.
This wine is an homage to the farmhouse of the same name that’s found among the traditional red grape varieties of Colli Piacentini. The vines are aged between 15 and 40 years for both Barbera and Bonarda (Croatina). 2012 is the current release of Macchiona. This one aged three years between various sized barrels, then several more years in bottle before it’s deemed ready.

The cost of shipping varies depending on which shipping option the buyer selects, as well as destination and number of bottles. The appropriate shipping rates will be calculated at checkout.
In the case of shipments outside of Ohio, the sole responsibility for complying with local regulations or tax requirements rests with the customer.
It is the purchaser’s responsibility to provide a current, shippable, physical delivery address. In the event a shipment cannot be delivered due to an incorrect address provided by the purchaser, or after three delivery attempts by the carrier, Hart & Cru reserves the right to charge purchaser the applicable carrier fee for rerouting to an alternative address or re-shipping to the same address.
