Elena is not only one of the most important winemakers in Italy, but also of skin contact wine. In northwestern Emilia-Romagna is the ancient wine estate of La Stoppa near the Trebbia River and just west of Parma. Elena took over for her father, and decidedly changed the direction of the estate. While he had experimented with Bordeaux varieties that were planted post-phylloxera, Elena decided to move in a new, but traditional direction. From then on, she planted Barbera and Bonarda for reds and Malvasia and Trebbiano for whites, each of which are well-suited to the hot climate. She farms biodynamically, intervenes minimally in the cellar, and often allows her wines to age for several years before release.
Ageno is a skin-contact wine that uses varieties typical of Emilia-Romagna. The wine ages for at least four months on its skins in steel, and then about 2 years in both oak and steel. The Ageno wines are not released in chronological order. Ageno is an ode to the original property owner’s last name.
