Variety: Cabernet Franc
Hailing from the central Loire Valley comes the small standout appellation of Saumur Champigny. Named for the city of Saumur and the village of Champigny, it’s nestled between Bourgueil, Chinon, and Anjou. This is an area famed for its Cabernet Franc, but Saumur Champigny is an exception to the typical style. The wines are less rustic and tannic, more light and fresh. Instead of ageing in concrete, this Cabernet Franc ages in stainless steel tanks. The screw-cap closure allows the wine to retain its freshness, instilling its drink-me-now mentality. The history of the La Crois de Chaintres began four generations ago; father Paul and son Frédrik built up this estate to where it is today. Frédrik continues to steer the winery in a more natural direction; he employs sustainable farming and has converted more than half of the vines to organic practices.
