Two vineyards in the heart of Chianti Classico were joined in the 1950s, forming what is now called Isole e Olena. The de Marchi family got its start in winemaking three generations ago in the mountains of Northern Italy (Piedmont), but moved to Tuscany for the opportunity to create a larger vineyard property. Paolo de Marchi is the current generation winemaker. Over 43 years, he has earned a reputation as “Mr. Sangiovese” by experimenting with 100% Sangiovese wines in a region where a classic blending recipe is locked into disciplinare rules.
This is Cepparello, first produced in 1980. It is widely acclaimed as one of the greatest expressions of Sangiovese today. Here’s one description of the complex 2015 Cepparello: “Shows lots of black cherries, cranberry tea, caramelized orange peel, roasted herbs and citrus peel. Full-bodied with ripe and quite round tannins that frame layers of cherries. Bright and fresh, yet rich and long at the same time. The sangiovese character really springs out of the glass.”
