Gaja is still among the most famed winemakers of the world today. Started by Giovanni Gaja in 1859, their legend is still going strong five generations later. Though each new member of the family brought with them a sense of excellence and attention to detail, it was really Angelo who brought the family name into the international spotlight, turning heads and garnering a reputation for pushing winemaking to new heights. Most notably is the family’s decision to use barrique with their 1975 Barbaresco cuvee at a time when everyone was using large barrels for aging. Taking this a step further, he began bottling many of his Nebbiolo as single vineyards, and crucial steps were made in the vineyard to yield better fruit. Today, Angelo carries on their commitment to excellence through their projects in Barolo, Barbaresco, and Tuscany.
This is the only white wine produced by the Gaja family made at their Tuscan estate. “Vistamarie” refers to the panoramic view of the sea and the Tuscan coast. The grapes themselves take on the sea salt in the air and exude the Mediterranean sunshine found here. This is a super small production wine that shows Angelo Gaja’s perspective of what yields a truly well crafted white. The juice ferments separately in combination of steel, concrete, and various barrels, and ultimately, is blended together.
