Variety: Pinot Noir
Romain Taupenot is in fact, the ninth generation of Burgundy domaine of Taupenot-Merme. Though the winery actually dates back to the 17th century, the current name comes from both of Romaine’s parents. His career flip-flopped from helping in the vineyard as a child, followed by a career in finance leading him to Paris. Later on, he returned home to assume management of the domaine by the side of his sister, Virginie. The family farms organically across just short of 14 hectares between both Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. Romain refers to himself as a “lazy winemaker,” in regards to spending more time in the vineyards, but less in the cellar.
It is clear that just as much attention to detail is paid to this Bourgogne Rouge as it is to the domaine’s top wines. All the fruit is hand harvested and completely destemmed. The Pinot Noir is aged just over a year in oak before its release. This is a perfect entry level bottle from a flagship producer of Burgundy.
