Andre Ostertag is a pioneer in more than one regard in his home in Alsace. Not only is he an enormous advocate for environmentalism, he’s a firm believer in making his wines about the terroir versus focusing on the style of a particular grape variety. After studying in Burgundy, he returned home armed with inspiration on how to make his wine better, opting to lower yields, and implement biodynamic farming. As with his artistic flare for sculpture, a “no-recipe” approach is another part of his unique winemaking. He’s made his own classifications, a purposeful act against the appellation laws. Andre is still going strong and his wines remain firm in their identity.
This is a Riesling made in a lean, dry style. The fruit comes from 25 year old vines situated on a terraced hillside of granite. Unlike many of his other wines aged in barriques, his decision to age Riesling completely in stainless steel keeps it fresh and vibrant.
