Jacky Blot of Domaine de la Taille aux Loups is a rising star in the French and international wine scene. He produces his wine with true vision and no sacrifice, two attributes rarely seen in the commercial wine world today. While working as a wine broker in the Loire Valley, Blot came into contact with a winemaking family no longer capable of caring for their land. Believing the site needed to be respected and shown to the world, his inner voice urged him out of his office and into the vineyards. From this beginning, in 1989 he has since expanded his lands to include parcels in Vouvray, Montlouis, and Bourgueil. Though just across the river from Vouvray, Montlouis does not have the strong market grip of its neighbor. However, its vineyards and age of vines can produce wines that outshine just about anything.
This Chenin is coming from a monopole vineyard of Jacky Blot’s—La Bretonnière, in Noizay, a commune of Vouvray. While the vineyard clearly lies in Vouvray, it can no longer be labeled “Vouvray” as the AOC because Blot vinifies the wine across the Loire River at his cellar in Montlouis. He now must label his Vouvray wines as “Vin de France,” a depreciation of the wine’s worth. This was the effect of a law change that occurred several years ago. The vines from La Bretonnière are 50-60 years in age. The wine is aged in barrels, 20% of which is new.
