Before the town of Montalcino achieved any international recognition, a small group of winemakers banded together to form a consortium, eventually forming an international symbol representing the quality of Brunello di Montalcino. The founder of Mocali, Dino Ciacci, was one of those winemakers, who believed in the development of Brunello long before the rest of the world did. Before grapes were successful, Dino and others relied on the crops of olives for oil production and sheep to make cheese. Grains were also common, though it wasn’t long before these were replaced with Sangiovese vines. Dino’s grandson, Tiziano and wife Alessandria, took a step in a different direction by bottling their own wine versus selling their grapes for production. Thank you to these strong winemakers, Mocali has made huge strides in putting Brunello on the map, as a food friendly and exceptionally age worthy wine.
Coming entirely from the Raunate Vineyard, which is Mocali’s oldest vineyard site boasting 31-year-old vines. The Sangiovese spends a lengthy journey in oak. First it is fermented in French oak, spends the next three years in smaller oak barrels, and finally rests for seven months in the bottle before its release.
