Variety: Malvasia, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc
This is our first producer from Croatia, which is just across the Adriatic pond from Italy. Clai is from the northern part of the Istria peninsula. The production of the wines is very small, encompassing just ten hectares of vines and five hectares of olives trees. Their goal is clear: to make quality wines, not quantity. Vineyard work is meticulous, with the winery being certified organic, and the process for the wines is a natural one. Something unique to their perspective is their belief that there is no such thing as good or bad wine when it’s done naturally, the vintage is just different. They grow traditional varieties, though they vinify international varieties as well.
The wine which some would choose as the only wine they would drink till they die. This is a blend of traditional varieties of the area, which you’d also see in northern Italy. Malvasia takes the lead in the blend, but the Pinot Grigio lends the pinkish hue with a few days of skin maceration from each variety. The Clai family never drinks this wine cold.
