Varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, Carmenère
The history of this estate refers to the Vauthier family of the medieval region, Saint-Emilion. This is one of three properties managed by the couple, Alain and Pauline. One of their other properties is Château Ausone, ranked a Premier Grand Cru Classé. Even with the higher rated property under their belts, the same methods are used for Chateau de Fonbel. The vineyard sits on 16 hectares of land on the plain of Saint-Emilion. Here the soils embrace the classic gravelly-sand of the region. Four varieties grow here to make their wine. Most wines of the region depend on Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Alternatively, Château de Fonbel utilizes small amounts of Petite Verdot and Carmenère in their blend. This choice, in addition to their devotion to excellence, sets the domain apart from others in the appellation. This Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, using the aforementioned varieties in the blend, is aged in 30% new oak barrels.
