Head south in Tuscany past Siena, and you’ll hit Montalcino, home to one of Italy’s big Bs, Brunello. At Casanuova delle Cerbaie, they do things classically, taking their time to nurture quality. From plant selection to fruit plucked off the vine, everything is manually selected. The local clone of Sangiovese is planted in their vineyards, which sit 250-350 meters above sea level, and cover fifteen hectares. Keeping with tradition, some of this land is planted to olive trees. While it may sound like no small chunk of land, only the best of the best makes it to the bottle, and total annual production is about 35,000 bottles. The riserva designation promises five years of ageing, and all of the fruit in this particular bottling comes from the prized hill of Montosoli.
