It’s not often that a primo property planted to Sangiovese grapes – known as Brunello in this part of Tuscany – olive groves, and pristine forest is available for purchase in Montalcino. Although the winery was founded in the late 1970s by a German woman, it was purchased in 2008 by Roy Welland, an American entrepreneur. The vines face southwest on the prestigious hill of Montosoli, sloping gently upward toward the fortezza in Montalcino. On this side of the hill, the vines are protected from damaging wind – cold from the north and hot sirocco from the south. The hillside vineyards produce wines more concentrated in red fruits and floral aromas.
While it is challenging to generalize any vintage of Brunello di Montalcino because of diverse growing conditions on all sides of the hilltown, 2010 was by all accounts a perfect growing season. Some have even called this vintage “historic.”
