Still, it wasn’t until Xurxo finished oenology studies that the Alba’s began producing wines commercially. In 2006 Albamar was born.

The name Albamar is a smooth portmanteau of the winemaker’s family name and the Spanish word for ‘sea’. It’s a perfect illustration of what is important to Xurxo Alba: family and what the Atlantic has to contribute to the vines grown on its shores; sandy soils, salinity and the wet ocean breeze that must be carefully monitored and managed like a beloved, yet tempestuous child. The way they compromise with the sea in Rías Baixas is to trellis vines to create air flow between vines and grape clusters, thereby avoiding fungal infection and exposing more vines to sun and breeze.

Albamar stands out even amongst winemakers in Rías Baixas, using only indigenous yeasts and forgoing malolactic fermentation. Growing 20-30 year old albarino vines in Cambados’ sandy soil, the grapes are hand selected, reflecting the careful and focused traditions that the Alba family has cultivated for generations.

The 2023 Rías Baixas Albarino comes from 20-30 year old vines planted in sandy soil at sea level across several vineyards. Each vineyard is fermented separately in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged on its lees for 5-8 months in foudre and lightly filtered before bottling.
