Without a doubt, Bernhard Ott is making some of the best wine in Austria today. While his family has been producing wine in Wagram since the late 19th century, there was a pivotal moment that occurred as soon as he took the wheel from his father. He opted to make changes. Biodynamic farming became an enormous focus, so much that the EU contacted him and thought there was an accounting mistake when it was reported he’d used 100,000 Euro worth of manure for composting. He and local vignerons started the Respekt movement in 2007, focusing on the biodynamic wine movement. His fruit is harvested by hand in a region known for its hills. He commits to making the finest Gruner and Riesling in Austria year after year.
‘Am Berg’ means ‘from the mountain' and stands as the entry level wine. It’s delightful, quaffable, and fresh having been aged in steel only.
