Variety: Cinsault and Pais
Pedro Parra’s story may be unlike any other in the modern wine world. He was born in Concepción in central Chile and opted to obtain his PhD in terroir from the Paris Center of Agriculture. He spent 15 years consulting all over the world learning and growing. He has been coined as the leader of the “New Chile” winemaking movement and known as the “rock whisperer.” Now that he has settled with family in his hometown in Concepción, his current project is in full effect. Nearby are the remote viticultural areas of Bio Bio Valley and Itata Valley. Pedro has found a home here as the granitic mountains are isolated. Most importantly, winemaking has been uninterrupted by modern farming techniques. No roads led there, no irrigation, no conventional farming, no introduction of Bordeaux varieties. Time has stopped, the vineyards here average 45 to 120 year old vines. For Pedro Parra, who has stated “You cannot grow terroir,” the mysterious Itata Valley was the most natural choice to make wine.
“Pencopolitano” is the name of this wine, which means citizen of Concepción, which is Pedro’s home to his family, and additionally home to all his wines. The Cinsault and Pais blend is aged in untoasted barrels and cement for one year and another eight months in bottle before release. This bottle may overwhelmingly surprise you in its style, complexity, and purity.
