4 Monos means “4 monkeys” and refers to four friends and lovers of wine native to the region of Madrid. This “gang of four” assembled in an extraordinary manner, while hiking in the Gredos mountains. This is a landscape that is a meeting of Mediterranean and Alpine; the region is often deemed magical for its beauty and diversity. The 4 Monos, with various backgrounds, have a unified mentality: organic wine practice, minimalism in the cellar, a focus on the land and variances in terroir. While the friends only founded 4 Monos in 2009, they are bringing the potential of the Gredos terroir to the world’s attention.

Four decades of history have created an incredible wine that is still very much an underdog in a region dominated by big names. Juan Peñagaricano Akutain was an engineer in the Basque region, working more on the wine equipment than the wine itself. However, with many tastings and learning from many of the wineries that put Rioja as a wine region on the map, Juan decided to plant his own vineyards in 1975. His desire was to work only with his own fruit and to control every step of the farming and winemaking. He purchased a horse and strived to make wines in the traditional style of the famed wine houses of the region. Less than 20 acres of vines means the estate is manageable. Juan's son has now taken over the day-to-day operations.

The year was 1997. A world-renowned winemaker had just shown Christopher Cannan and his wife, Charlotte, an abandoned vineyard just north of the Gratallops called “Figueres.” That same day, the entire Cannan family piled into their car and followed the winemaker, post-haste, to Barcelona. At a simple café, the Cannan’s purchased the 100-hectare estate. Initially, the terrain of the previously abandoned vineyards had to be prepared for planting. (A nearby grove of century-old olive trees needed to be re-worked as well.) Both undertakings were just the beginning of what would become the Cannan family’s quest. They traveled extensively in their spare time to work under some of the best winemakers in the world. Today, their combination of passion for the property and skill in the cellar sets these wines above the rest.
