Gramenon, Cotes du Rhone Sierra de Sud 2019
Regular price $36.00 Save $-36.00Variety: Syrah
Domaine Gramenon in the Southern Rhone has quite the story behind it. It begins with Michèle Aubèry-Laurent, the reserved yet fierce woman behind the name. A doctor by trade, she and her husband Philippe, bottled the first vintage of Domaine Gramenon in 1990. As a nurse, Michèle had a very natural approach, one that she carries over to her care of the vines. Philippe was also a talented winemaker, with a creative and edgy approach, and loved pushing the regulations of the INAO (the French organization regulating agricultural products.) You can see how the couple inspired each other in their work. In 1999, Philippe was killed in a terrible accident, leaving Michèle to care for the vines, farm, and three children. Instead of backing down, she persevered with the same mentality as before, furthering her non-interventionist approach even more. Her son, Maxime, who’s also made a name for himself in the wine world, continues Domaine Gramenon’s progressive legacy with his mother.
Meaning “southern sierra,” the Syrah fruit comes from 15-25 year old vines. The grapes are partially destemmed, allowing for more opportunity for mouthfeel and tannins. The Cotes du Rhone ages in a combination of stainless steel and barrique for seven months before bottling.

This is Grenache coming from sixty year old vines. It seems that the previous bottlings of “La Papesse,” were labeled under the Papesse classification, but the 2019 vintage is now under the Cotes du Rhone appellation. The grapes are partially destemmed, macerated in wood, and then aged for twelve months in French barrique.

Cote de Baleau, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classe 2016
Regular price $45.00 Save $-45.00Variety: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon
Female run by Sophie Fourcade, Chateau Cote de Baleau is a beautiful property positioned on the right bank of Bordeaux in Saint-Emilion. The property was founded in 1643 with a long history of great families having ties to the land. The vineyards are planted to 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The soil is limestone and sand located not far from the famed estate La Gomeire. One of the most impressive things about Chateau Cote de Baleau is the age of the vines, which are over 40 years old; Bordeaux as a whole is still rebuilding much of its old vines.
The fruit undergoes thirty days in a tank where it macerates. The wine ages up to 18 months in oak, half of which is new, before it's released. This bottle could be drunk now with a little decanting, or cellared for several more years.

Cos d'Estournel, Les Pagodes de Cos Saint-Estephe 2016
Regular price $125.00 Save $-125.00Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot
Cos d'Estournel takes its name from the old Gascogne dialect word “cos,” which means hill of pebbles. This estate has the most unique situation on several contoured hills in which the vines have been planted. The varying soil types also set this Saint-Estephe estate apart from other Bordeaux houses; there are multiple forms of clay, which is where Merlot thrives best, and gravel where the Cabernet does well. The village of Saint-Estephe is the most northern of the Bordeaux appellations, which in turn means it is closest to the Atlantic Ocean. This position near the ocean results in a microclimate resulting in less harsh winters and milder summers than the rest of Bordeaux.
This chateau is a second classified growth of Saint-Estephe and Les Pagodes de Cos is the second label wine at the more approachable price point and drinkability. You can see the two pagodas on the bottle label. This is a classic example of the Saint-Estephe style; a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with small amounts of Petite Verdot and Cabernet Franc blended with it. It is aged in 30% new oak. This could drink well now or age for another 10-15 years.

La Gravette de Certan, Pomerol 2015
Regular price $135.00 Save $-135.00Variety: Merlot and Cabernet Franc
Vieux Chateau Certan upholds its name as being one of the oldest chateau in Bordeaux because of its beginnings in the mid 18th century. Fast forward to the early 20th century, a Belgian wine merchant, Georges Thienpont, founded the modern estate. While Vieux Chateau Certan is the first wine, the estate now makes a second wine, which is that of Gravette de Certan Pomerol. With the modernization of the winery comes new vineyard practices: green harvesting and reducing yields of the vines, ultimately leading to the best wine Vieux Chateau Certan has ever seen.
This bottle is 87% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc coming from the appellation of Pomerol in the right bank of Bordeaux. It is a bottle that can certainly age in the cellar, but would deliver well if opened now.

La Dame de Montrose, Saint-Estephe 2010
Regular price $100.00 Save $-100.00Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
Chateau Montrose is a Second Growth Bordeaux from the appellation of Saint-Estephe. Legend tells it that the name of Montrose came about when sailors on the river saw the flowering heather from a distance; therefore calling it Mont Rose, meaning the pink mount. And so it stuck. Montrose has a highly esteemed list of winemakers attached to its history; previous winemakers and owners of this estate also dabbled in ownership of other First Growth Bordeaux houses. After tasting the 1989 Montrose, the Bouygues brothers became deeply inspired to buy the property when it became available. Beginning in 2006, major renovations began with 55 million euros invested in creating an environmentally conscious winery at the top of its class. And it has remained at the top for over 200 years.
La Dame de Montrose is the domaine’s second wine, also dubbed “the lady” of the Montrose Bordeaux house. Montrose was one of the first Bordeaux houses to make a second wine, which they started in 1860. This bottle measures up in quality and all other aspects to Montrose’ flagship bottle. It is made of about two thirds Cabernet Sauvignon complemented by Merlot making up the remainder. This bottle is drinking well in 2021, but could always do with more cellar time.

Jacques Carillon, Puligny-Montrachet 2018
Regular price $111.00 Save $-111.00Variety: Chardonnay
Jacques Carillon is an artist when it comes to the ethereal wine regions of Puligny-Montrachet and its neighbor, Chassagne-Montrachet. Learning from his father before him, Jacques continues the art of viticulture and winemaking. His mediums are his five and a half hectares of prime real estate vineyards and his sleek usage of new oak. Even during the coldest or warmest of vintages, Jacques’ wines are balanced and elegant, portraying microscopes into the vineyard’s particular sites.
Even though the 2018 vintage was a warm one, Jacques still managed to produce an age worthy Puligny-Montrachet with tension and balance. The vines come from eleven different parcels across seven vineyards in the appellation. Vines are on average 40 years old. This bottle gets 15% new oak, though he has a six-year barrel rotation system for his used barrels. This Puligny will only get better with a few more years in the cellar.

Chateau d'Issan, Blason d'Issan Margaux 2016
Regular price $60.00 Save $-60.00Variety: Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon
Chateau d'Issan is a Third Growth Bordeaux house classified back during the 1855 classification, though the history of the estate dates as far back as the twelfth century. The Margaux estate did not attain its current name until the Essenault family, who owned the property for five generations, renamed it “Issan” ﹘a contracted version of their surname. The Cruse acquired the property after World War II, when it had been left to deteriorate, and since, the family has been able to restore the quality to its former glory. The Lorenzetti family has since joined forces with the Cruse family, operating in tandem.
Blason d’Issan is the estate’s second wine, which translates to the “coat of arms” of Issan. Most of the vines for this wine are over 25 years old, which are the oldest vines of the estate. The wine is a nontypical Margaux wine, as its blend is more Merlot than Cabernet Sauvignon. The ageing process takes place over 14 to 16 months; the barrels used are 35% new. 2016 was an overall excellent vintage in Margaux. On the wine label, you will see the estate’s motto “Regum mensis aris que deorum” which means “for the table of kings and the altar of Gods.”

Meyney, St Estephe, Bordeaux 2017
Regular price $60.00 Save $-60.00Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot
Château Meyney is one of the oldest estates in the Médoc, the subregion on the left side of the Gironde estuary. The estate is a former convent with records dating back all the way back to 1662. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot are planted right up to the banks of the river, making for a serene landscape. The estate has changed hands many times leading to its current owner. CA Grands Crus, a subsidiary of the Groupe Crédit Agricole and owner of several esteemed Bordeaux houses, purchased Meyney in 2004. Today, the vines are looked after with exceptional care by the Technical Director for CA Grands Crus. Château Meyney is a single block of 74 hectares, all overlooking the Gironde estuary. The placement of the vines is important, as the estuary protects these vines from frost.
The vines are between 35 and 40 years old, although some of their older vines are closer to 100 years in age. The blend is representative of the Saint-Estephe style: driven by Cabernet Sauvinon and blended with Merlot and Petit Verdot. The oak ageing is done in 50% new, taking place over the course of 18 to 24 months, vintage depending. This bottle can be enjoyed now, or could cellar another ten years.

Malescot Saint-Exupery, Margaux Grand Cru Classe 2012
Regular price $113.00 Save $-113.00Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc
Chateau Malescot does have a history to boast having been around since the early 17th century. It is most noted for its previous owners’ ties to nobility, notably King Louis XIV. It is also ranked as a Third Growth Bordeaux. At some point, the labels of the bottles were changed, incorporating a new line of type that still remains on the bottles. The phrase “Semper Ad Altum,” which translates to “always striving higher” is seen on the banner flagged by two lions. The lions are synonymous with the left bank of Bordeaux, reiterating the power and nobility of the wines found there. Today, the Chateau Malescot ship is run by Jean Luc Zuger who is making quite the name for himself in the realm of modern Bordeaux.
The various soil types in these 35-year-old vines are iron, clay, and gravel making this wine a true stunner. While the vinification and ageing of the wine does vary vintage depending, Malescot typically will be fermented in concrete and stainless steel tanks. The wine finishes its ageing process in mostly new oak, anywhere from 80-100%. We recommend this bottle to be drunk anytime after 2024, ideally.

Chateau la Lagune, Haut-Medoc Grand Cru Classe 2010
Regular price $140.00 Save $-140.00Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot
Like many of the historic Bordeaux estates, Chateau La Lagune boasts its fair share of history dating back to the 16th century during the times of King Henri IV. This was during a time when the Dutch began draining the water from the marshes and swamps surrounding the Garonne river; this formed what is now the modern age of Bordeaux. After economic crises and weather conditions that rattled Bordeaux during the 20th century, George Burnet replanted these vines full throttle from a mere five hectares to over 100. Caroline Frey has been leading the charge of Lagune since 2004, bringing with her a serious attention to not just winemaking, but vine health and organic farming.
The vines for the Chateau Lagune range from 40 to 80 years old. The wine is blended before it goes into stainless steel vats to ferment. The wines aged in French oak, 50-60% of which is new, for 18 months before bottling. It is a bottle that is ready to drink now, but would do well with more time in the cellar.

Bernard Defaix, Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2018
Regular price $28.00 Save $-28.00Variety: Pinot Noir
The Defaix family is a fourth generation of a family of vine-growers rich in personality. Bernard Defaix started the vineyard in 1959 with 2 ha. Vineyard holdings across the Chablis region of Burgundy have expanded to 27 ha including three Premier Cru vineyards (Côte de Léchet, Vaillons and Lys) and others in the Chablis and Petit Chablis appellations. Bernard’s sons Sylvain and Didier have been managing the domain for about twenty years, handling winemaking and vineyard operations, respectively. Didier’s wife, Helene, handles administration and sales. Although this is a small property – common in France – the Defaix family undertook an extensive study of their vineyard soils to better understand vine root systems and the impact of mechanized vineyard operations. From 2012, they have been producing organic wines.
This is an approachable Pinot Noir classified as an AOC Bourgogne Rouge bottling. The vines come exclusively from a vineyard in Auxerre, which is just outside of Chablis. It is simply aged in 2-3 year old barrels to optimize the freshness of the fruit. This is a wine to drink now and with all manner of food.

Clos de Gamot, Cahors 2016
Regular price $25.00 Save $-25.00Variety: Malbec
The Jouffreau family of Clos de Gamot have been farmers in Prayssac, France since 1290 while the estate's history dates back to 1450! Fast forward to the year 1880, and Europe is in the beginnings of phylloxera, killing most of Europe’s vines. In 1885, Guillaume Jouffreau decided to graft the last of his Malbec vines to a different rootstock, and it works! He almost single handedly saved not just the estate, but the rest of Cahors.
Today, Clos de Gamot is sourced from two parts of the same vineyard. One part are vines 120 years old (dating back to the phylloxera days); the other vines are 40-70 years old. All of these vines are low in yield, but what’s created is sure to be some of the most riveting Malbec you’ll ever taste.

Olivier and his brother, Patrick, are always strengthening their business model; they now call themselves Olivier Leflaive Freres.
Typically you would see Premier Cru level wine with the name of the Cru following the name “Rully;” however this 1er Cru is a communal one indicating the wine comes from multiple Premier Cru vineyards. The wine is aged in neutral oak.

Alain Voge, Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes 2015
Regular price $95.00 Save $-95.00Variety: Syrah
The wines of Domaine Alain Voge have helped to shape and evolve history of the northern Rhone appellation. Alain began working with his father at just seventeen years, deciding to remain in the Cornas region with his father’s vines. The wines were sold in barrels until the 50’s, then were transitioned to bottling in 1957-58. In the 60s, vineyards were lost due to new housing built; the Voge family then began renovating several higher parcels, which in turn proved as better conditions for vines. In an effort to learn more about other French wines, Alain would visit Leon every two weeks, meeting sommeliers and chefs who would introduce him to other regional wines. Doing this, he forged links with these professionals. Alain’s wines soon began appearing in some of the finest restaurants of Lyon and Paris. The domain became certified organic and biodynamic in 2016.
The Vieilles Vignes come from Syrah vineyards more than 30 years old. The soil is decomposed granite that is also referred to as “gore”. This gives the wine a powerful masculinity and animalistic quality that seems to be alive in the glass. While it teems with ruggedness, this wine also exudes elegance. This bottle ages in large barrels for twenty months, with about 15% of these barrels being new.

Doyard, Champagne Grand Cru Extra Brut Les Lumieres 2008
Regular price $335.00 Save $-335.00Variety: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir
Champagne Doyard's roots trace back to the 17th century in the small village of Vertus in the Cotes des Blancs appellation of Champagne. Yannick Doyard took the helm in 1979 and his son Guillaume has since taken over. They farm from the family's original domaine in Vertus, as well as sourcing their fruit from several Grand Cru villages. The family's focus on viticulture includes biodynamic farming. Plots are worked by horse and the yields are kept low making for a wine intense in style. Their Champagnes also spend at least 48 months on their lees. The goal of Champagne Doyard is to make the most expressive terroir-driven wines possible. For this, we love their attention to detail.
This exquisite Grand Cru bottle draws its fruit from more than one Grand Cru village. Two thirds of the fruit is Chardonnay coming from Avize and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger; the other third is Pinot Noir which hails from Ay Grand Cru. This wine is aged older Burgundy barrels and spends 120 months (ten years) on the lees before it was finally released at the end of 2018. It is concentrated and intense, full of energy and raciness!

Dupeuble, Beaujolais Nouveau 2020
Regular price $20.00 Save $-20.00Variety: Gamay
In the States, we talk about “The Deep South” and we are referencing the southern culture down by the gulf. The personalities coming from this part of the Country is unlike anything else. The hospitality is over the top yet sometimes slightly back country. This is very much the same for the regions where Dupeuble is from; this is the deep south of Beaujolais. Recently many of the Cru’s (towns) have become quite famous, but this part of the region is true farm country and has been for a long time. The Dupeuble Domaine dates back to 1512 and has produced wines with very little change in their methods.
The Dupeuble Beaujolais comes from vines ranging from 50 to 100 year old vines from clay, granite, and limestone soils. The juice ferments naturally via carbonic maceration for just 5 days versus its traditional Dupeuble Rouge counterpart that ferments for 8-12 days. This Nouveau ages in stainless steel to keep it fresh and juicy. Drink it immediately and enjoy it chilled as the French do!
Beaujolais Nouveau Day, historically, is the release of the first wine of the harvest, but also a celebration of the end of harvest. The grapes are harvested just weeks prior. There over 100 Nouveau festivals all over Beaujolais that go with the region's excellent food. Although the Nouveau style has given Beaujolais a reputation of plonk-like, bubblegum-ey, fruity-tooty tasting wine, that is clearly not always the case.

Paul Pillot, Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge 2018
Regular price $60.00 Save $-60.00Variety: Pinot Noir
Thierry Pillot is the fourth generation of the Pillot legacy in the legendary Côtes de Beaune of southern Burgundy. Even though the domain began with Thierry’s great grandfather—Jean-Baptist —the domain was named after Paul Pillot—Thierry’s father. Jean-Baptiste was a barrel maker by trade and began focusing on his vines full time in 1900; the estate was born then. Today the estate is run by the energetic Thierry, who spends most of his time in the vineyards, but is a non-interventionist in the cellar with discreet usage of new wood. The family are artists in the cellar when it comes to oak usage; it is very well integrated into the wines. Thierry is one of the finest winemakers in the Côtes de Beaune; if one should come across any of his bottles, don’t hesitate to snatch them up.
Another showstopper from Thierry Pillot. The bottle is labeled "Vielles Vignes" denoting the vines are over 50 years old. As is standard for Pillot, half of the grapes are whole cluster fermented, inducing structure and backbone to this bottle. The wines is aged in just 10% new barrels.
