G.D. Vajra, Barolo Bricco Delle Viole 2015
Regular price $100.00 Save $-100.00Variety: Nebbiolo
The G.D. Vajra winery was created in 1972 by Aldo and Milena Vaira, initially from vineyards planted by Aldo’s father in 1947. The winery was named for Aldo’s father, Giuseppe Domenico Vajra, because at the time Aldo was not old enough to establish the winery in his own name. Today the family has 40 hectares under vine in Barolo and other surrounding appellations. Their prized holdings in Bricco delle Viole were planted in 1949 by Aldo’s grandfather. Milena and Aldo’s three children – Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro – are all involved in the family winery operation situated in the village of Vergne. The family is hard-working, passionate, and caring. Their focus is on building something for their children, caring about the community, and cementing the stories of the regions’ past. The family is longtime friends of Hart & Cru. They continue to uphold their passion for quality wine and the people who surround them.
Bricco delle Viole is a significant vineyards as it is the highest and closest to the Alps, ranging from 400-480 meters. Its name means "hill of violets" referring to the blossoms at the top of the hill during the spring. The oak ageing takes place in large Slavonian casks for almost 32 months.

Fratelli Alessandria, Langhe Nebbiolo Prinsiot 2020
Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00Variety: Nebbiolo
Fratelli Alessandria is one of the stars of Verduno. The Alessandria family – owner Gian Battista, his wife Flavia, brother Alessandro, and son Vittore – lovingly produce a robust range of Piedmont specialty wines from start to finish. The farmer of the group, Gian’s philosophy is “the best wine comes from a great vineyard.” Located in the town of Verduno, in the commune of Barolo, the property has operated as a winery since the early 19th century. The wines were winning prizes as early as 1843. The original Alessandria brothers (fratelli) purchased the property in 1870. There is a deep understanding of how to work the vines in the marl soils they call “Sant’Agata,” a mixture of silt, limestone and sand. The Alessandria family first released their wine in 1978. Their style has always been classic, along with the grapes of the region; they never shifted towards a modernist hand.
This bottle is classified as Langhe Nebbiolo DOC and comes from three different vineyard sites. About one third of the vines are actually Nebbiolo from declassified Barolo vineyards in Verduno. Soils there are a mixture of limestone and clay with a high amount of limestone. The wine aged for ten months in older French and Slavonian casks, two months in tank and three months in bottle.

Arpepe, Grumello Rocca De Piro 2015
Regular price $60.00 Save $-60.00Variety: Nebbiolo
In conversation with Italian winemakers, or vignaoioli if you will, Arpepe is arguably the best of the best. Wine publications don’t seem to disagree; the awards are countless. No wonder, given the amount of work and care that must go into the vines, grown on precariously-stacked terraces on the slopes of Valtellina, two hours north of Milan toward the Swiss border. Here, at these heights, Nebbiolo is known by another name, Chiavennasca. It grows in villages that might bring to mind Rosemary’s Baby – Sassella, Grumello, Inferno! The high-altitude, cool weather climate transforms the grape into something quite different than what you might find in neighboring Piemonte. While Barolo may be king, Valtellina is a wizard.
Translation works not only with languages, but with terroir to bottle. Grumello, where the topsoil is a bit deeper than in the other two villages, has softer ground, producing a softer, less angular wine. Its roundness renders it ready-to-drink, but its elevation keeps it age-worthy.

Luigi Baudana, Barolo Baudana 2015
Regular price $100.00 Save $-100.00Variety: Nebbiolo
Arriving at Luigi Baudana is akin to entering the garage or basement of an old house in a sleepy European village. It’s shouldered up against the house next door, just down a short driveway and behind an old iron gate. Upon entering, it becomes immediately apparent just how small-scale this venture really is and the scarcity of the wines suddenly makes total sense. Luigi Baudana is one of the last of the old guard producers in Serralunga, Barolo. As Luigi and his wife Fiorina started slowing down, they began to look for a steward for both their vineyard sites (Baudana and Cerretta) as well as their existing wines. Giuseppe Vajra of G.D. Vajra was a natural choice, with an acute understanding towards preserving the soul of these great wines. Giuseppe is now the guardian of Luigi’s cumulative vision, but will also function as the catalyst to propel the vineyards forward, maintaining the highest standards of Barolo.
This Barolo brings the art of blending, drawing from vineyards located in Serralunga, a commune within Barolo. The Nebbiolo vines are 20-30 years in age, expressing the terroir of this village.

Arpepe., Rosso di Valtellina 2018

In conversation with Italian winemakers, or vignaoioli if you will, Arpepe is arguably the best of the best. Wine publications don’t seem to disagree; the awards are countless. The high-altitude, cool weather climate transforms the grape into something quite different than what you might find in neighboring Piemonte. While Barolo may be king, Valtellina is a wizard.
This Rosso di Valtellina was the result of a challenging harvest back in 2003. The winery was making only single cru wines at the time, and thus decided to blend all their crus together to make this Rosso. It became an integral part of the Ar.Pe.Pe. wines thereafter. Some of the vines are up to 100 years old! The wine undergoes up to twelve months in small casks, usually chestnut, French, or Slavonian oak before its release.

Chandon de Briailles, Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru 2017
Regular price $250.00 Save $-250.00Variety: Pinot Noir
Domaine Chandon de Briailles is quickly becoming one of the very finest to be found anywhere in the Côte D’Or; classically styled, terroir-driven Burgundies that age brilliantly. This historic estate of Domaine Chandon de Briailles was established in 1834. In 1988, Claude de Nicolay took over from her mother as winemaker—a mother to daughter legacy, not often seen in winemaking. She crafts traditionally styled wines from one of the Cote d’Or’s best terroirs. Claude’s management has been fully biodynamic since 2005 and organic since 1998. The winemaking incorporates a large percentage of whole cluster fermentation, making quality “vin de garde”—or wines meant to keep. Île de Vergelesses is considered by many to be the Grand Cru of the Premier Crus of Pernand-Vergelesses. In great vintages, this 1er Cru can even rival that of Corton Charlemagne for complexity and finesse.

Chantal Lescure, Chambolle-Musigny "Les Mombies" 2019
Regular price $85.00 Save $-85.00Variety: Pinot Noir
The Lescure Domaine is among the newer winemaking families, but just as fierce. Chantal Lescure was begun in 1975 by Chantal and her husband Xavier. They claimed 18 hectares of land strewn throughout Chambolle-Musigny in the Cote de Nuits and the Volnay in Cote de Beaune. Today their two sons coordinate the running of the estate and farm from parcels running from Dijon in the north to Meursault in the south. The Domaine takes organic farming very seriously, as they have been practicing full organics since 2000; they're even certified by Ecocert.
Though classified at "Villages" level, "Les Mombies" refers to a lieu dit site in Chambolle-Musigny. It's a step below Premier Cru quality coming from a very well regarded village in the Cote de Nuits with classic limestone and clay soils.

Jean-Jacques Confuron, Romanee-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru 2014
Regular price $600.00 Save $-600.00Variety: Pinot Noir
When Sophie Confuron took over for father Jean-Jacques after he fell ill, the vines were superbly located, but the cellars were outdated. While in wine school, Sophie Confuron met her future husband Alain Meunier. They decided to make wine together in 1985. Sophie enjoys joking and mentions that she married Alain for love since he did not have any vineyards of his own. They have 8.5 hectares of vineyards over fourteen appellations. Every last bottle is sold on a strict allocation basis internationally. Overwhelming demand for their Pinot Noirs have led the couple to create a second super-negociant operation; they buy grapes with the same standard as the other wines, and sold under the Fery-Meunier label.

E. Pira e Figli, Langhe Nebbiolo 2019
Regular price $45.00 Save $-45.00Variety: Nebbiolo
It would not be doing Chiara Boschis justice to say she is simply a great winemaker; she is a human of undeniable confidence, fortitude, and charm. This comes through in her wines as well. She concentrates primarily on the regional Nebbiolo grape while contrasting her family’s centuries of traditional male-dominated winemaking. Chiara takes a rebellious path, employing green harvesting, shorter fermentations, and the use of small French oak casks. The amount of new oak used on her cru Nebbiolos has decreased from 80% to 50%. Even her first wine, 1990 Barolo Riserva Cannubi was an incredible success. The winery became certified organic in 2014. Taking this a step further, she was able to convince 80% of the winemakers in the neighboring Cannubi to switch to organic as well!
The 2019 vintage of this wine is very special to Hart & Cru. Our content writer, Brittany, worked the 2019 harvest with Chiara in Barolo, helping to harvest Nebbiolo grapes from all the sites.
This Nebbiolo fruit was harvested from younger 15 year old vines in the Ravera di Monforte Cru at 450 meters elevation. This is fermented in steel, then goes on to age in French oak barrels (unlike other Barolo producers using Slavonian oak) for 14 months, and then another two months in the bottle. This drinks delicious now, but we also love this one with a little time in the cellar, too.

Evening Land, Pinot Noir Seven Springs La Source 2017
Regular price $100.00 Save $-100.00Variety: Pinot Noir
Evening Land's Seven Springs Vineyard is one of the oldest and most sought-after sites in the Willamette Valley. Al MacDonald planted the vines in 1984 next to the Douglas fir trees that surround the northern section of the property. The vineyard has always been dry-farmed and is positioned to capture the cold air from the Pacific that enters the valley through the Van Duzer Corridor, just to the north of the appellation. Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman are two of the top names in the wine world today, and recently they obtained 100% control of the site. With their vigilant oversight and visionary stance on winemaking, the quality of these wines continues to elevate.
La Source is considered the best Pinot Noir from the historic vineyard. It is a selection of the best barrels in the cellar.

Fratelli Alessandria, Barolo "Gramolere" 2017
Regular price $90.00 Save $-90.00Variety: Nebbiolo
While most of the domain's vineyards are located in Verduno, the Gramolere cru is located in the neighboring Monforte d’Alba. It’s a different expression of Barolo than expected from Fratelli Alessandria; a wine of structure and character.

G.D. Vajra, Barolo Albe 2018
Regular price $50.00 Save $-50.00Variety: Nebbiolo
Albe is an ode to the traditional Barolo, which was always blended from different vineyards. Its name Albe refers to the sunrise, indicating the three separate sunrises that take place over each vineyard with its unique sun exposure and elevation. Albe is aged in large Slavonian oak casks for 30 months and blended before its bottling.

Monte Bernardi, Chianti Classico Retromarcia 2019
Regular price $25.00 Save $-25.00Variety: Sangiovese
Even though the estate Monte Bernardi dates back to 1085 in the region of Panzano in Tuscany, Michael Schmelzer and family purchased the estate in 2003 and have been making beautiful Sangiovese-based wines and olive oil ever since. The property’s vineyards are situated in the hilly, southern-most region of Panzano, an area that has been acknowledged as one of the “Grand Crus” of Chianti Classico. Most of the vineyards are more than 40 years old. Before 1992, the grapes were sold to neighboring farms. The Schmelzer family, originally from Michigan, purchased Monte Bernardi in 2003. As winemaker, Michael has invested time, love and money in the vineyards, the winery and villa. The property was certified biodynamic in 2004.
Retromarcia is more than the sum of its parts; its name is an ode to the classic elegance of the historic style of Chianti. Sangiovese shines on its own in this wine coming from vines planted between 2003 and 2010 from estate fruit in Panzano. Ageing is completed over 18 months in large casks. This is fresh and fruity, though with well-balanced acidity and structure.

Salem Wine Company, Pinot Noir 2019
Regular price $25.00 Save $-25.00Variety: Pinot Noir
Salem Wine Co. is a secondary project from Evening Land sourcing from three vineyard sites across Eola-Amity including Seven Springs Vineyard. The wines are meant to be enjoyed young and sold affordably.

Thierry Pillot, Volnay 1er Santenots 2019
Regular price $100.00 Save $-100.00Variety: Pinot Noir
Thierry Pillot is the fourth generation of the Pillot legacy in the legendary Côtes de Beaune of southern Burgundy. Even though the domain began with Thierry’s great grandfather—Jean-Baptist —the domain was named after Paul Pillot—Thierry’s father. Jean-Baptiste was a barrel maker by trade and began focusing on his vines full time in 1900; the estate was born then. Today the estate is run by the energetic Thierry, who spends most of his time in the vineyards, but is a non-interventionist in the cellar with discreet usage of new wood. The family are artists in the cellar when it comes to oak usage; it is very well integrated into the wines. Thierry is one of the finest winemakers in the Côtes de Beaune; if one should come across any of his bottles, don’t hesitate to snatch them up.
Notice that the label is under Thierry Pillot's name instead of his father's domaine name. This Volnay is from 45+ year old vines and undergoes 50% whole cluster fermentation, giving the wine a savory note and adding more aromatics. This is aged in barrel, 25% of which is new.

Monte Bernardi, Chianti Classico Retromarcia 2018 1.5L
Regular price $57.00 Save $-57.00Variety: Sangiovese

Arpepe, "Il Pettirosso " Valtellina Superiore DOCG 2016
Regular price $56.00 Save $-56.00Variety: Nebbiolo
Nature has a way of making its voice heard when needed. Meaning “red-breasted robin,” one such bird flew into the cellar, landing on a barrel as if in warning. Upon tasting the wine, the family realized it was ready and didn’t need further ageing; thus, the dawn of wines that weren’t made into a Riserva. Made in special vintages, the wine ages in small barrels for 12 months, then ages in bottle for 24 months before release.

E. Pira e Figli, Barolo Via Nuova Chiara Boschis 2017
Regular price $103.00 Save $-103.00Variety: Nebbiolo
Prior to 2009, Via Nuova was the common name of the vineyard behind Chiara’s cellar in Barolo. Under new wine law, the vineyard became known as Terlo. At this time, Chiara decided to stop producing Via Nuova as a single vineyard expression, and instead make it a classic Barolo blend from all of her plots; thus reiterating the name “Via Nuova” as the new way. The blending of several vineyard sites was common with Barolo producers until the 1960s, when the single vineyard bottlings took off. Ironically, “Via Nuova” represents the new way with a nod to old-time tradition.
