The wind cooled parcels face every cardinal direction, giving the winery a comprehensive range of sun and wind exposure. Maddalena Fucile and Matteo Vaccari are the talented duo behind the Chianti Classico wines of Cigliano di Sopra. In Maddalena’s family since the early 20th century, the estate goes back to the 12th century. Historically a producer of bulk wine, Maddalena and Matteo have transformed the estate into a producer of precise and prolific styles.

Whole berries macerated for 10-30 days and fermented in stainless steel, with twice-daily pumpovers. 14 months in cement, 6+ months in bottle. With rave write-ups in the New York Times, Wine Spectator, and Forbes, winemaker Angela Fronti is proving she has what it takes in a region historically dominated by patrimonial lineage. Angela, who comes from a long line of peasant farmers, left Tuscany to study enology but ultimately decided to return and put down roots in Radda. With some of the highest elevation holdings in the commune, she farms multiple plots of land creating Cru Level Chianti with a precision rarely seen at this price point. Nestled in between the hills are the Sangiovese vines and olive trees. Though the property was farmed for hundreds of years, it did not become the winery of Tenuta di Carleone until 2012. Karl Egger and Sean O’Callaghan both operate the winery with a clear vision, even though Sean is nicknamed “Il Guercio” (meaning one-eyed rascal.) They create Sangiovese in a classic way, though with Sean’s twist using organic and biodynamic practices. Nothing is added to the wine, grappa, or cold-pressed olive oils. Keep a look out for their other Sangiovese expressions and grappa.

This is the flagship bottle of Tenuta Carleone made from the best grapes from all their vineyards.
