Variety: Sangiovese

Tenuta Carleone di Castiglioni was first mentioned in the year 1078 when monks first founded it in Chianti, named for the village of Castiglioni meaning “small castle.” The property is a romantic vision of wooded hills, rivers, and fertile plains. Nestled in between the hills are the Sangiovese vines and olive trees. Though the property was farmed for hundreds of years, it did not become the winery of Tenuta di Carleone until 2012. Karl Egger and Sean O’Callaghan both operate the winery with a clear vision, even though Sean is nicknamed “Il Guercio” (meaning one-eyed rascal.) They create Sangiovese in a classic way, though with Sean’s twist using organic and biodynamic practices. Nothing is added to the wine, grappa, or cold-pressed olive oils. Keep a look out for their other Sangiovese expressions and grappa.

This is the flagship bottle of Tenuta Carleone made from the best grapes from all their vineyards. It's just Sangiovese, no blending. This wine spends 18 months between tonneaux barrels (about 10% new), cement, and stainless steel. Noble Rot magazine boldly says of this wine, “Could this be Tuscany’s answer to Haut Brion?”

The Padelletti family is one of Montalcino’s oldest and most traditional winemaking families. While the Denomination of Brunello di Montalcino did not become a protected appellation until 1980, though the family had vines dating back to the 16th century! The family currently utilizes a single plot of land next to the town of Montalcino called Rigaccini Secondo. As their family’s legacy has been steeped in Tuscany for so long, the current generation focuses on the traditions of the region. Making wines of elegance and their intense passion for farming is at their forefront of the family’s vision.

Coming from the estate vines of 30-35 years, the wine ages in both Slavonian and French oak barrels for thirty months, with the latter being the only way the family breaks the local tradition. It could be drunk now, but would do well with some age.

It is not enough to say that Isole e Olena is held to the highest regard and winemaker Paolo de Marchi has an unquestionable vision. Fourth generation winemaker Paolo De Marchi studied Agriculture at the University of Turin and worked harvests in California and France before returning to the family estate in 1976. He found much need for improvement and modernization in the Chianti Classico region. One of the first projects involved planting single vineyards of international varieties, such as Chardonnay and Syrah. With these steps, Paolo discovered a way to balance tradition with innovation. Isole e Olena is named for the formation of the two estates that were purchased by the De Marchi family in the 1950s. Over 43 years, he has earned a reputation as “Mr. Sangiovese” and also the “Dean of Chianti.”

The Isole release of the 2016 vintages is held in high regard by many esteemed peers, including Antonio Galloni and Jancis Robinson. This in purely Sangiovese, a return to classic Chianti Classico winemaking.

The winemakers of Pian dell’Orino are not natives to Tuscany, nor did they know one another before collaborating to make Sangiovese in Montalcino. Caroline was born in the Südtirol in a large Renaissance castle where she managed the family property. Amongst her duties at the property was an enormous, six hundred year-old grapevine that is the oldest and largest existing vine in all of Europe. Caroline’s partner, Jan, was born in the city of Karlsruhe in Germany, not far from the Pfalz region, studying both viticulture and oenology in Germany. He then worked for several years as an oenologist in France before meeting Caroline and moving to Montalcino. Together they grow purely Sangiovese.

A wine sourced entirely from the Scopeta vineyard. This wine macerated for four weeks before being drawn off, twice as long as the Rosso. It then ages for 42 months in large barrels.

This is Cepparello, first produced in 1980. It is widely acclaimed as one of the greatest expressions of Sangiovese today. Here’s one description of the complex 2015 Cepparello: “Shows lots of black cherries, cranberry tea, caramelized orange peel, roasted herbs and citrus peel. Full-bodied with ripe and quite round tannins that frame layers of cherries. Bright and fresh, yet rich and long at the same time. The Sangiovese character really springs out of the glass.”

Variety: Sangiovese

Like many Italian names, the name of Monteraponi is more just the name of the winery. Its name comes from the medieval village of the same name with three ancient towers dating back to the 10th century. It falls just outside Radda located in the zone of Chianti, prime territory for Sangiovese. While the entire estate is 200 hectares, just 20 are devoted to vines and olives. The rest of the property is painted with oak and chestnut trees creating an amphitheater, a natural way to incorporate biodiversity among the vines and a healthy ecosystem. The current family has been farming here since the 1970s, and are often part of the same conversation as the Montevertine wines.

While Baron’Ugo could be bottled as a Chianti Classico, there was a firm decision to call it a “Toscana Rosso,” perhaps due to the fact that this wine does not drink like Chianti Classico. The fruit comes from 40 year old vines and ages for three years in very large oak barrels before release.

Even though the estate Monte Bernardi dates back to 1085 in the region of Panzano in Tuscany, Michael Schmelzer and family purchased the estate in 2003 and have been making beautiful Sangiovese-based wines and olive oil ever since. The property’s vineyards are situated in the hilly, southern-most region of Panzano, an area that has been acknowledged as one of the “Grand Crus” of Chianti Classico. Most of the vineyards are more than 40 years old. Before 1992, the grapes were sold to neighboring farms. The Schmelzer family, originally from Michigan, purchased Monte Bernardi in 2003. As winemaker, Michael has invested time, love and money in the vineyards, the winery and villa. The property was certified biodynamic in 2004.

The estate is located just outside of the famed tower city of San Gimignano on the western border of the Chianti zone in Tuscany. The estate dates back to Roman times and there are stories of the Knights Templar utilizing the property for meetings and ceremonies. Elisabetta and her husband bought the property in the 60’s, bringing it back to life from its abandoned state. The couples’ profound respect for the land has always been the focus—farming sustainably and using what nature gives them every vintage. Elisabetta’s soul is caring and driven. She is a hard worker, and her mission is to leave this small place on earth better than the way she found it. She still travels the world pouring her wines telling stories. 

Rich, complex Sangiovese made in the style of Brunello. Aged 24 months in used barrique and another 3 years in bottle.

Variety: Sangiovese

San Lorenzo is a historic property, at least in the world of Montalcino producers. The name comes from Lorenzo Ferretti who originally purchased the land of the estate during the late 19th century. Generation after generation, the property operated as a farm that raised livestock and made wine for home consumption only. The family continued to plant more vines and sold the fruit to other wineries. It wasn’t until the great surge of interest in Brunello around 1997 that the family, namely Luciano, began to bottle their own Sangiovese. They bottled their first wine in 2003 and haven’t looked back since. 

Bramante is truly a rare bottle. It is in memory of the late Bramante Ferretti, Luciano’s grandfather who lived to the age of 101. As a Riserva Brunello, the wine is only made during certain years when the fruit harvest is at its absolute best. It’s aged at least two years in barrels, it’s bottled after the fourth year, and rests until January six years after its harvest. This is wine to age further if at all possible.
