Steve Matthiasson is a California pioneer. Daring to break Napa tradition, Steve and his wife Jill have planted rare, ancient Italian grapes though recognize that Napa loves all the well-known international grapes. A Matthiasson tasting experience, laid out on the picnic table that separates their home from the winemaking operation (with their dog and at least one son stopping by!) shows instantly how the couple reveres the place they farm together. This is real California wine and Matthiasson’s wines are where California wine is headed. Steve Matthiasson is a six-time nominee for a James Beard award, a serious achievement in the wine industry. He has also been named “Winemaker of the Year” by both Food & Wine Magazine and The San Francisco Chronicle. Steve and Jill are long time friends and mentors to Hart & Cru.
This Rhone-inspired blend comes from two organic vineyards in Dunnigan Hills and Napa Valley. The fruit is grown exclusively for this rose and harvested early just as it would for a sparkling wine to retain all its glorious acidity. Everything about this wine is intentionally done in a fresh style which lends itself perfectly to all manner of spring vegetables and summer porch sipping.

Variety: Glera and Pinot Noir
Wild Nature is a winery located in both the Verona and Venice provinces. The project is one focused on terroir, a mindfulness for nature, particularly the animals that inhabit the vineyard sites. In addition to their organic practices, they are also firm believers in biodiversity in the vineyard, which the animals on each of their bottes reiterates. The winery has been pioneering organic farming since 1974 in northern Italy. Alongside their vineyards, you will find tree-lined banks, meadows, and ponds, encouraging the abundance of wildlife.
The region of Veneto now allows for the production of "Prosecco Rosé" as the name of the wine and the winemaking appellation. The wine is done in the charmat method, different from Champagne, as it is done with the tank method. Glera, the traditional grape used for Prosecco production, is blended with an additional 10% Pinot Nero. The wine has no added dosage (sugar).

Giuseppe Russo left his native Sicily for a time, trained as a pianist and music teacher, and studied literature. But when his father, Girolamo, died, Giuseppe returned in 2005 to make “the best wines (I) can in this exceptional, often challenging but uniquely beautiful area.” Although the Russo family calls the area in and around Passopisciaro home, it is an interesting and dynamic place that is attracting winemakers from the all over the world. The Russos have 26 hectares of land, 15 planted to vineyards and the rest to olives and hazelnut groves. Their vineyards are on the north face of Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Etna, in the north-eastern corner of Sicily.
This is made entirely from Sicily’s main red variety, Nerello Mascalese. It is made from mostly young vines jout of the San Lorenzo Contrada, which are perfect for this fresh rose. To retain its freshness, it is aged completely in stainless steel.

The Cooperative, La Collina, resides in Reggio Emilia, the heart of the Emilia Romagna. This region is home to Lambrusco, the tri colored Italian flag, and Parmigiano Reggiano! The story is unexpected; back in 1975, twelve young men joined minds and hearts to begin a cooperative of both agricultural ambitions and humanitarian efforts. The project was aimed to draw in those with drug problems, rehabilitate them through the rewards of biodynamic farming, and reap the benefits of incredible wine, cheese, and other produce. The winery is, in essence, a result of community collaboration far ahead of its time in the hills of Emilia Romagna.
This is a traditional pure expression of Lambrusco without the cloying sweetness. Enea uses frozen grape must to help kickstart the fermentation naturally, and boost the aromatics of the resulting wine. While this Lambrusco is definitely tart and fruity, the acidity and bubbles will stand up to charcuterie and pizza effortlessly.

The Laherte brothers, Thierry and Christian, are sixth generation winemakers in the Valle de la Marne of Champagne. Aurelien Laherte represents the seventh generation and has been taking the winery to a new dimension, while still following in the footsteps of his family. They have 75 different plots across Epernay, Vallée de la Marne, and the Cotes des Blancs. The mantra with the family is to let the terroir speak for itself with a deep respect for tradition, heritage, and land. Each example of Laherte Fréres is more stunning than the last. The Laherte family, with Aurélien at the helm, have earned themselves a reputation as one of the most compelling and revolutionary producers in Champagne.
This rosé Champagne is produced exclusively from the family’s 30-year-old Pinot Meunier vines. The blend brings together Meunier made into white and red wine, then blended. It is rich and focused. As Antoni Galloni says, "In a word: magical."

Variety: Carignano, Alicante Nero (Grenache)
Ampeleia was born only just in 2002 from the collaboration and friendship between noteworthy icons—Elisabetta Foradori, Thomas Widmann, and Giovanni Podini. They created a place where they could not only develop an agricultural project but also fulfill a common dream. The estate comprises different plots of land, each located far apart and on different altitude levels—their mission is to create variables in altitude, soil type and microclimatic conditions. Variety is the spice of life, at least Ampeleia, representing the project’s constant quality and willingness to discover. The grape varieties that have been planted are common to Mediterranean vineyards reflecting the tradition of growing multiple varieties in the same vineyard. Today, the estate extends over three altitude levels and covers 35 hectares of vineyard.
This is just the second vintage of this rose produced annually; only 5000 bottles are made! This combines the Alicante Nero (Grenache) and Carignan together in a lovely, fruity, yet tannic rose that’s lighter in alcohol.

Since the 80’s Francesco Valentino began to convert his land to organic farming, but he came to find he wanted more from the vitality of his vineyards. In 2000 he implemented biodynamic farming. These practices are thanks to his studies on Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian scientist/thinker who touched on endless fields of human endeavor, including biodynamic farming. After a few years of biodynamics, he realized there was still something further to be done. Francesco studied the works of Masanobu Fukuoka, a farmer/philosopher known as the father of modern day natural farming. At long last he implemented sustainable agriculture, in which all synergies in his vineyard ecosystem were linked: the Synergistic Agriculture, a balanced ecosystem.
Made from the Pugliese native grape susumaniello. Often used as a blending grape, it takes form in this monovarietal bottle of bubbles as a zingy, zesty watermelon-y refresher, with just a kick of RS to balance the acid. 36 hour skin maceration makes for a pop of color. Aged on lees in steel tanks, it walks the line between playful and elegant. Like all of the Dibendetto family’s wine, this one is unfiltered with very little SO2 added at bottling. First released in 2019, it’s already a crowd pleaser.

The story of two brothers: even while still in high school, Eric was already collecting bottles of prized top dollar Burgundy and Chablis, hiding them under his bed when he started college. Lyle’s quest for knowledge landed him in Austria where he met one of his most important friends in the industry, sommelier Rajat Parr. After a decade of restaurant work, Eric returned to Santa Barbara to start his own project, Lieu Dit, inspired by the Loire. Older brother Lyle had also worn many hats in the industry, ultimately landing a job for one of the most esteemed importers Kermit Lynch, leading regional sales. After leading separate lives for some time, the brothers both felt a calling to merge their two paths, which is how Railsback Frères came to be born.
There’s no beating around the bush with the intention of this rosé. It’s inspired by the famed Provence Rosé made by Lulu Peyraud of Domaine Tempier. With her passing at the age of 102 in 2020, this style of rosé will continue to stand the test of time. “Les Rascasses” means scorpion fish and is an homage to the fish that Lulu would include in her provincial Bouillabaisse fish stew.

The estate is located just outside of the famed tower city of San Gimignano on the western border of the Chianti zone in Tuscany. The estate dates back to Roman times and there are stories of the Knights Templar using the property for meetings and ceremonies. Elisabetta and her husband bought the property in the ‘60’s and brought it back to life from its abandoned state. The couples’ profound respect for the land has always been the focus. Farming sustainably and respecting what nature gives them every vintage. Elisabetta's soul is caring and driven. She is a hard worker, and her mission is to leave this small place on earth better than the way she found it. She still travels the world pouring her wines telling stories.
The Canaiuolo rosato is named for the variety of the same name, noted for its importance of the wines in Chianti. Elisabetta held the rosé back to release it once it had an extra year to come together to her vision. She calls it a transgender, a balance of two identities. It has the gentleness of a white, but the strength of a red; the perfect wine.

The Boulay family has been in Sancerre since 1380, Gerard the current generation of the family adds no yeast and little to no SO2 during vinification. He describes his role as one of “surveillance” to make sure nothing goes wrong. In general he works by instinct, “au feeling” because he wants to “let the wine live” and tries not to interfere with the natural process. Most of his vineyard sites average about 45 years in age. While many vignerons in Sancerre continue with conventional winemaking, Gerard continues to implement organic farming and making thoughtful, traditional Sancerre.

Variety: Nebbiolo and Vespolina
Stated as “a courageous wine growing archaeology project, that speaks of passion. Proprieta Sperino is the realization of a dream: to restore the important tradition of Lessona wines by recovering the historic cellars to produce a wine with the greatest respect for local tradition.” This is the undertaking of famed winemaker, Paolo di Marchi, a pursuit that defines the second portion of his wine career. Paolo gained recognition at his Tuscan property, Isole e Olena, and now he wants to revive the Northern Piemonte site that has been in his family for years. This project was started in 1999 and now Paolo, with his son Luca, are producing classic wines from these incredible vineyards, which have a history dating back to the early 1800’s. It is exciting to see work going back into the region to make it great again.
The Nebbiolo and Vespolina come from vineyards across Bramaterra and Lessona and DOC’s. The soils there are rich, full of minerals. The juice macerates with their skins for just 12 hours and then the wine stays on their lees for three months. It is further aged in bottle before release. This is a rare style of rose that can age. It is complex and quaffable, hinting at layers of floral and minerality in the class.

Variety: Garnache Tintorerea
Alfredo Maestro’s family came to Peñafiel from the Basque Country. Having grown up amongst the vines, he had a great interest in wine and started making his own from an early age. From the beginning, he farmed organically, yet in the cellar he worked literally by the book, teaching himself enology from a textbook, using all the tricks to make a “correct” wine of Ribera del Duero. He would use cultured yeasts, tannins, color enhancers, etc. It took some time, but Alfredo eventually had a revelation—as an organic farmer, why would he use chemicals to adjust the finished wine? It made the most sense for his cellar work to match the integrity which he used in the vineyard—so he did just that. He began eliminating unnecessary products and additives. By 2003 he was making wine without additives whatsoever, including sulfur.
This style of rose actually means “teardrop pink” in Spanish. The fruit comes from high elevation vineyards in the Ribero del Duero area of Castilla y Leon. The majority of the grapes come from old vineyards planted in calcareous-clay soils.The fruit is completely destemmed and does not undergo any maceration on the skins. The ageing process is completed between both stainless steel and used French oak.
Succes Vinicola, 'Patxanga' Rose 2021Regular price $20.00 Save $-20.00
This winemaking tale happens in the small appellation of Conca de Barbera, located just a stone’s throw from the Atlantic Ocean in the region of Catalunya. A couple that was brought together by their love of wine. Initially the project was facilitated by “Viver de Celleristes,” a winemaking facility that allowed young entrepreneurs space to create their wines. They eventually moved to a more permanent winemaking residence in a garagiste winery. With them being so new to the Conco de Barbera appellation, other local growers assumed the couple did not know what they were doing as they were using organic methods. Mariona and Albert take part in all the work together. The wines are made in a natural manner, which is progressively becoming more and more of a focus in The New Spain.
Trepat is not widely known, though if you’ve ever enjoyed a Cava rosé, you probably enjoyed this core grape variety from northeastern Spain. Succes saw the potential in this lighter-toned red as a wine that didn’t need to be sparkling. “Patxanga” is not only a football street game, but also a type of music played during local festivals in Penedes; clearly the wine is meant for summer!

Even though the estate Monte Bernardi dates back to 1085 in the region of Panzano in Tuscany, Michael Schmelzer and family purchased the estate in 2003 and have been making beautiful Sangiovese-based wines and olive oil ever since. In addition to Monte Bernardi, Michael also keeps himself busy with several other projects in Italy, one of those being Fuoristrada, which means “off road.” The focus with this project is making excellent wine under an eco-friendly label on par with the quality you’d expect from the Monte Bernardi wines. Fuoristrada is packed, not “bottled” in a Tetra Pak resulting in a liter package. This means more wine for you, and less impact on the environment.
This is a fresh and fruit rosato coming from Sicily. The wine is certified organic and vegan, using one of the flagship varieties of Sicily.
'A Vita, IGP Calabria Rosato 2021Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00
Depending how you look at it, ‘A Vita can either be viewed as a lifetime or ‘from life.’ Either way you see it, this small winery is bringing a breath of fresh air to the most southerly region on the boot—Calabria. Dup Francesco and Laura de Franco farm in the DOC of Ciro, straddling the area between the Ionian sea and the Sila mountains. The area is known more so for its bulk wine, though ‘A Vita makes about 2000 cases in total. Their approach to farming and winemaking is minimal as they bring an overlooked region into the world spotlight.
The Gaglioppo fruit comes from a vineyard right near the Ionian Sea. The juice undergoes the saignee method after 12 hours on its skins yielding a darker rosato with a brickish hue. Its salty with a tannin kick, a fairly accurate representation of Mediterranean rose.

A cap on his head and mud on his boots has made us instantly fall in love with Freddie Savart, a jolly former football (soccer) player turned world-class winemaker. Freddie’s wild creativity and experimentation is crafting Champagne that has the entire wine world talking. Savart champions Pinot Noir based Champagnes grown in the mineral rich soils of Montagne de Reims. He’s a force to be reckoned with and celebrates the romance of wine. His wines are for the thrill seekers, the wine geeks, and of course, the Champagne lovers.
Ephemere changes with each vintage; no two wines are the same. This one is a collab with Maison Dremont. The fruit comes from both 2015 and 2016 and ages for five years on its lees before release.
