In medieval times, there were three lords of the Languedoc entranced by the beauty of a princess. She vowed to give herself to the most gallant, Christian man. The lords traveled to Jerusalem on a crusade to defend the tomb of Christ; upon returning, they discovered the princess’ death. In their grief, they each retreated to nearby mountains, living their lives as hermits. “Ermitage du Pic Saint Loup” translates to a hermit dwelling; Saint Loup Peak was named for one of the princess’ suitors. The three Ravaille brothers now operate the winery, their family having lived in the Languedoc for over 1000 years. The emblem of three fish not only reiterates the story of the three suitors, but also the fraternal bond of the three brothers.

The name of the bottling, “Tour de Pierres” means “tower of stones.” Perhaps the tower refers to the natural assemblage of limestone, and loose red clay stones at the bottom of the Gravette slope in Pic Saint Loup.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0268/9076/4311/products/Ermitage_du_Pic_Saint_Loup_2C_Pic_Saint_Loup_Tour_de_Pierres_Rouge_2C_Languedoc_2C_France_f78c52b5-9594-47a7-b809-3a47c158d37f.jpg?v=1590528103
domaine-de-terrebrune-bandol-rose-2024
Terrebrune, Bandol Rose 2024

Variety: Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Cinsault

Georges Delille founded Domaine Terrebrune in 1963, a few years after the AOC of Bandol was founded in 1941. The noble variety of Mourvedre was making its comeback and winemakers were uprooting vines and replanting left and right. Georges even followed some advice from Domaine Tempier patriarch, Lucien Peyraud. In 1980, Georges’ son Reynauld joined him in the winemaking; they bottled their first vintage together shortly after. Limestone is of utmost importance in the thirty hectares of the Terrebrune vines with plenty of variation from site to site. When Lulu Tempier married Lucien Peyraud, her father gave them the domaine, an active farm that had been in the family for 100 years. After tasting a pre-phylloxera bottle of Tempier Bandol, Lucien was inspired to research the terroir. Up until then, old vineyards planted with Mourvèdre had been regularly replanted to higher-yielding varieties. More research not only showed its historical roots to the area, but the grape proved to be more resistant to oxidation. Lucien worked with neighboring winemakers and the I.N.A.O. to establish Bandol as its own AOC. Replanting of Mourvèdre began; Bandol now requires a fifty percent minimum in all reds. Lucien has been paraded as the godfather of Bandol, but also as the man who revived Mourvédre to its former glory.

This may be one of the most famous examples of Mourvedre in the world, made famous of course by the Peyraud family. Formerly called "Classic Cuvee", this bottle was renamed "Lulu and Lucien" to honor the departed husband and wife team who built Tempier. This wine is a blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache, Cinsault, & Carignan from all the family vineyards. It is aged in oak foudres for about a year and a half.
