Hungary has more than been impacted by the toils of war and economy. In the region of Tokaji—pronounced toe-kai—is one of the most famous wines in the world. Driving this home, Hungary was the first place in Europe to have classified vineyard sites in the 17th century, the likely result of an accidental late harvest of fruit due to threats of enemy invasion. Fast forward to the 20th century: communist takeover in Hungary forced these classified vineyards to make nothing more than mass-production wines up until 1990. Enter world-famous wine writer Hugh Johnson, credited with reviving the legacy of the Tokaji region, who co-founded The Royal Tokaji winery in 1990 with a handful of investors. He is also joint owner of the Mézes Mály Vineyard, one of the two first growths of the Tokaji region. The winery is the leading producer of the Tokaji, effectively bringing about the renaissance of this special wine to the world.

Production of the aszu, aka “shriveled wine” is only done in exceptional vintages that produce the noble rot where harvest is a long lengthy ordeal. The harvest would typically begin in late October; grapes are harvested by hand, one by one by the best pickers, and repeated multiple times. After harvest, the aszu grapes are macerated in the grape must from the first harvest. The sweetness is measured by puttonyo, 25 liter wooden tubs, added to the base wine, ranging from 3 to 6 puttonyos for the aszu style. This has the most botrytized grapes added to the mix making it one of the most special and distinguished wines worldwide. This particular wine has only made during 15 different vintages since the winery’s founding in 1990.
