Gigliola Giannetti is a serious star of Montalcino with some serious winemaking pedigree under her belt. Her winemaking career began under Franco Biondi Santi, one of the most famous winemakers in Italy. With her work for the Consorzio di Vino in Montalcino, she made friends with another famous Italian name, Giulio Gambelli, otherwise known as the “Maestro of Sangiovese.” What makes Gigliola stand apart from other winemakers isn’t simply that she’s a fierce female of the wine industry; she focuses on wines of tradition, quality, and finesse instead of power. Both her daughters have heavily influenced her winemaking. The daughters’ grandmother would call the girls “Le Potazzine,” a common Italian term of endearment for children.
This is Sangiovese coming from just two different vineyard sites outside the village of Montalcino. Both vineyards are nearing 500 meters in elevation. This is the same fruit destined for Brunello, but the wine is aged for just ten months in large barrels and another six months in bottle. Just 900 cases are made annually.
