The last of the great Barolo generation is Mauro Mascarello who took over for his father, Guiseppe. He has been making incredible wine since the late 1960s. Not only does Mauro continue the family’s tradition of excellence, he also brought about incredible changes. Monprivato, the family’s vineyard from which they had been sourcing and blending with fruit from other Barolo sites, changed after 1970. Mauro opted to bottle the wine as a single vineyard site. He realized the potential for Monprivato as a wine that could shine on its own with perfume and richness. It has been one of the most consistently magical wines coming out of the Langhe region.
“Freisa” gets its name from the Latin word for strawberry, indicating its juicy red-fruited qualities with tannin and ageing potential like Nebbiolo. Freisa has gone in and out of fashion, likely due to its placement in sweet fizzy wines. This Freisa, especially with more cellaring, will shine just like the region’s other greats. From the Toetto vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, the wine ages in Slavonian oak barrels.
